hmm!-I am wondering are there water color crayons sold somewhere that are not as pricey as the SU ones? Are there any out there that are a good beginner set. Would I be better of waiting and saving up for the SU ones? What do you all suggest?
Faber Castell has wonderful, high quality art supplies. You can purchase a set of 12 watercolor crayons for about $4, a great price to experiment with a new medium in my opinion. I'm a big fan of Faber Castell products.
I found a set of watercolor crayons at JoAnns (don't know the brand), it was in the rubber stamping aisle. They were $14.99 for a set of 12 (I think). I didn't buy them, but I look at them everytime I go
I found some LYRA brand crayons at Hobby Lobby. They were about $27 for 24 of them (minus 40% coupon), and they also had a set of 48 for about $50 something dollars. I like mine.
Someone on e-bay is splitting up the crayons and selling them in groups of 12 like bold brights/earth elements/etc. They are I think 15.99. My only problem is how would I store them if I didn't have that box?
A friend and I split the cost of the Watercolor Crayons, if we need a specific color group (and we are both using them at the same time), we put them in a ziploc baggie to transport back and forth and for storage until we get them back in the tin.

I'd say save up for the SU! ones since they are in the same colors as our cardstock. Have you tried getting a group of stamping friends together to do a crayon club? If you don't want to wait for placing four orders to get all of them, you could just split the cost with someone and take turns keeping the storage tin.
Keep in mind with the other sets people have recommended that you are not getting as many crayons. The set of 12 for $15 works out to the same cost per crayon as the SU! set. Also, you will have to mix colors like you do with watercolor paints in order to get something close to the SU! colors. Are you willing to spend less money but twice as much time in order to get colors that coordinate with your cardstock? Not a slam, just a question to ponder. It's something I ask myself all the time, and not just concerning my stamping supplies. Monetary savings can be canceled out when you figure in the time it takes to make the substitute perform like the original.

I just bought the 12-pack of Staedtler Karat watercolor crayons at Joann's and with my 40% off coupon they came to around $8 or $9. I like them. I'm using them with an aquapainter - on the "dry" side - and they're working better than I expected them to. I've been considering getting the SU set in January (Sell-a-bration time) but I wanted to get some cheaper ones to practice with first to see if I really like them before laying out the $60 (that's a lot of stamp sets!!). I also figured I wouldn't really be out too much money buying these since, from what I understand, the SU set doesn't include a black, white or grey crayon, and this set had the black and white. Anyhow, I like them well enough that I'm figuring I'll probably go ahead and get the SU set, too. Linda

I have the SU crayons and like them. I'm the type that likes everything to coordinate, as I basically have zero artistic talent! I use them with a blender pen, which I think works better than a paintbrush or aquapainter. I'm still experimenting with the direct to rubber thing and haven't had great results -- yet.
It is a lot of money and the crayons are not the exact same color as the cardstock, because anything that is water based will often be a little lighter. I think a drawback is the lack of a black crayon. The per crayon price is fine, it's just that you have to buy the whole 48 of them. That all said, I find that I use them ALL the time. I LOVE them.
If I were you, I'd buy them during Sell a Bration and then get a free stamp set to boot!

I was wondering about the neutrals in the SU set. I really want them but I guess it might not be bad to consider getting a cheap set first for those.
Glad I checked this thread.

To answer a question above, I do this with my stampers. They get 4 ladies that want the crayons. Each month for 4 months they each get a set (either the regals/subtles/elements/brights) and 1 lady will get the case. By the end of the 4 months, everyone has the set and the case.
If you are interested in doing this let me know, I'd be happy to work with you.
A friend of mine gets a set of 12 from Viking Office Supply online. She says they are really good, and at about $3.50, a good price. I thought I'd get some to see if I like the concept at all before spending too much on something I won't use AGAIN!
I bought the Lyra 24 count for about $20. less, I believe (try a "google"
search) and love them, they have black, white, and neutral, which some sets don't have. Carolyn in MN
I bought some sets of the Faber-Castell ones for myself and for gifts (from Viking for less than $4) and I found a set of 8 at The Wishing Well, a franchise (?) party store in No. California, for $4. Also, at my lovely Ben Franklin in Grass Valley, I found individual crayons for sale for $1.39 each. They are a little bigger and really nice, and I could buy just the colors I needed that weren't in the other sets. I love SU products, but I will never pay that much for crayons. I store my crayons in little cabinet drawers that I have for my pens. Gay Howe
I actually bought a set of bold brights from that lady on ebay who is splitting up the sets. I didnt want to invest in the entire set until I tried them. The shipping to Canada was FAST ... got them within one week, which amazed me. One day I was at Staples and found a crayon holder for 47 cents that is perfect to hold them (instead of the case obviously) ... it has indentations for the crayons to lay in and is a plastic case, perfect! I do love the watercolour crayons, they are so easy to work with.
I bought the 24-pack of Staedtler Karat watercolor crayons at Hobby Lobby with my 40% coupon. They came to $14 because they discounted one of the sets to $21 because the tin was slightly bent. The crayons were unharmed
Ok, I have a question and I don't want to come off as being rude (just nosey! )
Why is it such a big deal to have the tin that the crayons come in? Why can't they just be stored in a baggie/ziplock container?
Just curious.
I like the tin because they are all organized and nicely laid out..easier just to look at the open tin and pick the color you want. Also, I would think if they're all laying together, color from one crayon might transfer to another. With the tin, too, they're protected...less chance of them getting broken or beat up. JMO.
