I don't use my background stamps too much now that there is so much great patterned paper on the market. Is this a trend? Am I just getting too lazy!????
I wonder about your own use of background stamps..

Okay...As a demo, I use the Background stamps on EVERY card that is done in a Stamp Camp or class. For personal use, I have been used a lot of DP, (SU! and others), on cards. However, I usually STAMP onto the DP!

Hey, use some of those background stamps then run it thru the Cuttlebug. I just got my bug so I haven't tried it yet but I've seen this in the gallery and it looks nice with the right BG.
Don't own a BG stamp yet, but weathered in on my wish list - cheesecloth too but can't afford before June 30. I find tone on tone or close to that so much more subtle than much of the patterned paper I own. My demo almost always has us use a BG on our projects in her classes.
When I started stamping I used only patterned paper for backgrounds...now I am steering towards the use of background stamps...there are so many SU stamps that I want that can be used as backgrounds...I am going to go broke!
I still love using bg stamps! Actually, I am not really into patterned paper all that much so the stamps suit me just fine. I hope to get around to getting a Cuttlebug one of these days but I'm sure I'll continue to use the stamps, and then run them thru the 'bug!
I like CB and BG layers together for textures. Don't use DP much.

I use my BG stamps more than ever. There are very few cards I make these days without one. In the past, I have very seldom used any DP. That said, with the pallette o' prints, that is changing a bit! I love the look of it, especially with the butterfly from Reason to Smile.
Since I put myself on a Patterned Paper moratorium I find my background stamps VERY useful for altering all the bulk paper packs (The Slab III, anyone?) into something I can use on cards.

When I was updating my stamp index last week, I discovered that not only have I traded some away, I don't use the ones I have very much anymore. But I don't use patterned paper all that often either. I find myself using small BG stamps found in sets or using main images to make a BG... if I use a BG at all.

Dunno why. I love the look and effect, but, I think I'm personally just in a different creative phase right now where I just seem to be happier with my own results when I stick to a clean background . . . ?
I *love* patterned paper, buy it, use it sparingly, mostly hoard it
Patterned paper lasts a long time with me, because I can barely bring myself to cut into it--dang, some of it is so gaaaaw-jus, you just wanna frame it and hang it on the wall. Covering it up can seem sacrilegious, depending on the paper!

Joan, speaking of BG stamps ... you made a great card on your blog using the Polka Dot background from CHF ... I bought that bg stamp because I LOVED the way you used it. I finally got around to giving it a try today and I cannot for the life of me get a good image with it. I got frustrated after wasting about 3 sheets of almost amethyst and decided to do something different for the bg. Any suggestions?
I'll say a very lawyerly thing. It depends. It depends what look I'm trying to achieve, how much time I have, etc. Mainly it's about the look for me. I love to buy dp and have way too much so I am trying to incorporate it on more cards and use up some of my stash. But I also love my background stamps and when I want something subtle, that's what I reach for. I especially love to stamp linen over an image in a light color. It gives it such a nice soft look.

Love my background stamps! Although I have to admit that I have bought most of them from Cornish Heritage Farm Stamps as I can't afford to have as many of the SU ones that I would like to have. There are a couple of SU stamps that I had to have and that I use all the time, but I also love my patterned paper (when I can bear to cut into it).

Thanks. I LOVE that background stamp. It is my all time fave. But, I do have trouble getting a clean image all the time. First, do not use SU's whisper white or very vanilla. It smears with this background stamp. I ink up, lay it face up and then put cardstock over it. About 75% of the time I get a good image!
Thanks for reminding me that that stamp is sitting buried under a pile of stuff!

Thank you Joan! So I just have to keep perservering with it!
Lisa, I am using the SU classic ink ... and the background is unmounted ... I lay it rubber up on the table and put the cardstock on it. I was using Almost Amethyst cardstock. I could NOT get a clean image ... but I will try again now that I know perserverance is the key!
Background stamps were one of the first things I bought from SU way back when -- other companies had nice ones but not big enough to fill a cardfront. I still buy them and use them often. If I am in a hurry to get a card out, background paper is a big time saver. But I think it is more fun to be able to combine just the right colors, designs and techniques and make my own background.
