French Script (although less than I thought)
Canvas
BUT I just got Fine Lace in and I LOOOOVE it-it adds nice depth and looks good with florals with BEING a floral if that makes sense-and I think with the right colors would even look good as a masculine bg because it adds great texture and depth. I like it more than some others because it is not as subtle as something like Just Jeans or Canvas, but not so defined as Paisley or Soft Swirls (which I also have and like, but not as much)
Geez-don't think I helped too much!:p

I just ordered canvas and my demo brought it over this afternoon. Haven't had a chance to play yet. I already have filigree, but my next order will include the Floral BG. Folks on SCS are doing wonderful things with it.
I use my French Script a TON. I think the only thing I'd suggest is to get one that has a different "feel" than canvas, such as a floral or word background.
I use the Floral over the Canvas, I also take uninked Leaf wheels and wheel it over an INKED Canvas or Jeans, then stamp the Jeans, and it kinda resembles the fine Lace bckgrnd. I constantly use the Canvas to make all other solid shapes into gingham, including letter sets, flowers etc.

I see a lot of great examples using French Script. I really like Just Jeans, but that is an awful lot like Canvas. I am anxious to get the new one with the diamonds (can't think of what it's called).

I have the french script and the emphemera (sp?) and I like both. I have to really work to get the color even - it wasn't something that was easy for me. What can I say? I am wheel challenged too....

I love the retired harliquin so I know I'm going to love the new harliquin too. I find that I can use that design with a lot of things. (I wish I was Jami and had 31 background stamps!!)

You gals are cracking me up!!!! I don't really have 31 BG stamps...I just went and counted and I only have 15!!!! Of course there are a few more new ones on my wishlist. I am a BG stamp fanatic for sure!
I just got the canvas background on Friday. Can you use the versamark pad on it? It just seems like it would be a pain in the tushy to clean up.
I use versamark on mine all the time. I like to use it with versamark then stamp something else (small flowers and stuff) with a darker color. To clean it (and all my bg stamps) I bought a pack of paint edger refill pads and just spray it with stampin' mist and wipe it with the pad. Works pretty good.
My favorite bg, besides canvas, it french script. Really want by definition though.
Until 2 months ago I swore I would NOT get a background stamp - EVER! Then I started seeing some great techniques with Canvas, so I had to order it but told myself that would be it. Then the new catty comes out and I see all these great scrapbook pages using background stamps - who knew? So now I have 6 on my wishlist:
Printed Pattern (or Harlequin as some are calling it)
Weathered
Fine Lace (a must have)
Crosshatch
and two that aren't new On Safari (because my husband really likes that one!) and Just Jeans.
I probably didn't help very much, but maybe you should just decide based on what stamp sets you have and choose something that would go with what you use the most.
I am really the new one "weathered"... but I have trouble getting B G stamps to stamp even...no I have not tried "sitting" on it....
I have found that the craft inks or the versamark work really well for some of the harder-to-ink-up background stamps. I have to do that with my canvas if I want even coverage. Also, sometimes I ink them up with the rubber up, put the cardstock over the rubber and brayer it. Jen70 told me recently she uses her hand and goes over it and she says that works too.

Me too Jami! I am so in to background stamps. I have about 7 of them. I've decided I'm going to order one a month till I have all the ones I want. I love how they can make a simple card look great.

Another way to make your backgrounds come out better is turn it upside down, lay your CS on the inked side, lay another piece of paper (just for protection) and then put the wood side of another background stamp down and PRESS!!!!!! A friend actually gave me a piece of wood just for this purpose and I haven't screwed one up yet!! I was always missing the center of a stamp or something didn't print well. It's the same concept as the brayer.

That's how I do it too. You can try inking the stamp with the brayer too. That usually works.
