This was a most enjoyable thread to read with a few LOL moments. It's also a question I've often pondered. So far, the image of book-burning has kept me from destroying any book, but, honestly, wholesale destruction of a library designed to limit enlightenment, enjoyment, and education for the people really doesn't have any relation to the innocent re-purposing of a single volume, IMHO. So, my quandary is settled. In the future I won't deprive myself the use of good material that is not rare.
I am a lifelong lover of books and identify with a desire to preserve, however, hymnals do have copyright issues and certainly te editions in my church have changed because they had outlasted their shelf life. Something that was discarded and can be preservedas a thing of beauty. Truly a blessing!
I was raised Catholic and thought we were suppose to feel guilty about everything!
Oh My GOSH!
You made me laugh out loud!
I was raised in the Reformed Church, but am now Episcopalian.
I have a Bible I got when I was four for perfect attendance in Sunday School and I would never tear it up because of sentimental feelings. However, to use a piece of scripture on a card would be IMO beautiful. I would have no problem taking apart a hymnal and using it for meaningful cards, especially since the Hymnal in question in this post is at a resale shop and not likely to be used in worship again anyway. What better way to honor it, than to use it in a beautiful work of art that someone else will treasure?
I consider myself a good Christian. I would have no problem tearing up an old Bible, hymnal, sheet music, (I use a dictionary, too) that I found in a tag sale. I definitely wouldn't use my personal items. These are also frugal times. I say: "Go for it". God knows what is in our hearts and HE is the only Judge we need to worry about. Albeit, he us Our Creator. And he wants us to emulate him.
Hope this helps.
I think the fact that you needed to ask others the question probably answered it for you. It's between you and your God. If you don't have a Spiritual Being, then I would think it wouldn't bother you.
IMO, I like the photo-copy idea best of all. However, I was raised if you drop a "Spiritual" book you need to kiss it.
You could ask a Pastor, Priest, Minister, or Rabbi and share the answer with us please!
I wouldn't have a problem at all using one of our current ones...if it were my old Cokesbury, it would be another story! Those are really sacred to me! ;)
I love books and literature but I'll cut up an old book for a project. Doesn't phase me. I make tons of envelopes out of old atlas books. I feel good about that too.
