Default Anyone sell cards?

If so how do you figure what to charge? My friend asked me to make her a pack of 12 to give as a gift & I have no idea what to charge her.

Also do you normally just sell to friends or do you have a special place you sell them at?

My friends and I were charging $10 for a pack of 8 note cards. I guess it depends on how much you put into each card. We are selling our individual cards for $4 each, but there is more to them. Good Luck

Hi,

SU!'s Angel Policy doesn't allow you to sell cards without a copywrite stamp on the back and you also can't sell them in a retail environment. I have sold Christmas cards to family and friends. If they buy 10, I give them 2 free. I charge between $3 & $4 per card, depending on how many embellishments / accessories I use (also, the amount of time spent).

She wants 12 cards. They are pretty nice, but I wouldn't want to charge her too much. I do have an angel policy stamp that I put on the back of all my cards so I have that covered.

Well, if you sell them at $3 each and offer them to her with the buy 10 get 2 free deal, then she'll actually pay $2.50 per card. I don't think that is very much to pay for beautiful hand made cards !!!

Yeah your probably right. I was going to ask her what she thought I should charge since I know she likes them. I also thought like $2, but I didn't want to over charge. Maybe I was being too modest.

Just think about how much time it takes to complete the cards and also how much cards cost in Hallmark, etc. !!! I'm sure that your friend would agree that your cards are worth it . . . she did ask you !!!

Isn't that such a hard one?!?! You hate to over charge, but don't want to sell yourself short either. I always hate when it's someone who means well, but obviously doesn't understand the time and effort that goes into stamping....like my well meaning father that so unknowingly offered 75 cents a card! He wanted truly simple ones, but still! Oh well, he's a man and he totally not crafty so he really had no idea.

I always charge $3/each or 8/$20 with a FREE clear stationary box.

Where do you get the clear stationary box? I was going to give them away as gift's to my kid's teacher's. Do I still need the angel policy stamp?

I should have checked here sooner! My son had a bake sale at school and I sold my cards with matching envelopes for $1.00 each. Oh well, at least they sold and the money went to help one of his classmates who has lukemia (he is in kindergarten). I was thinking about selling them 3 for $5, but maybe I'll rethink that.

Default Selling Cards

I just started selling my cards for $2 each or buy 4 get 1 free. I use to charge $1.50 if they didn't have embellishments and $1.75 for ones with embellishments but thought it's a lot easier making them all the same price and that they are worth $2 a piece. Carol

I do $2 each or 3 for $5 - that would make your 12 card set $20 - definitely not too much to ask for cards handcrafted with care!!

This is a question that I have thought about many times. But, I know how much time I put into my cards and what does it say about my work if I sell them for just $1.00 apiece. ? I have been selling my cards for $3.00 to $4.00 or if they buy at least a dozen of the same card then I will sell them for $2.75. I put a lot of time into my cards and I just can't sell myself out. I say that we should be proud of our work and get paid at least what the box stores are getting for mass produced cards! Whew! Had to get that off my chest. HTH.

Thank you--now I don't feel nearly so bad asking $2 or $2.50 a card that seems simple to me--I guess it's because it's NOT simple to the person willing to pay it

Question selling your cards

Thanks to all for answering questions you didn't even know I was asking!

I have recently begun thinking about selling my cards, both individually and in sets, and was wondering about the charges and Angel Policy laws.

However.....I still do have a couple of questions:
1. Do you ever take "orders" for cards?
2. Would anyone here do wedding invitations? I've been asked by 2 different people if I would do that.
3. What about things like "fall festivals," church bazaars, etc. I think we can sell there, but am not sure of the policies.
4. How else would you package sets if you decided not to buy the clear boxes (as noted above). If you use them, are they worth the cost?

Whew, what a lot of questions!

I sincerely appreciate any answers that you may post!

1. yes i take orders for cards, but usually only from close friends/ family.

2. i haven't done wedding invitations, but i did do christmas cards. 75 for my grandma, 40 for my aunt, etc. they payed, but only what they would have payed for packaged. recently i have done 20 baby announcements, 30 new address post cards, 20 baby shower invites. all for family members.

i think it depends on how much you just *love* making cards, vs wanting to make money. i run out of things i NEED cards for, so i solicit people around me to 'let' me make cards for them!!!

3. yes, bazaars and craft fairs are temporary and great places to sell! (garage sales are another one)

4. i usually tie mine with either ribbon or colored rafia crossed like wrapping a package. that way they are secure. i also like to tie a little 'medallion' type cut out from the center. just makes them seem a little fancier. this is worth it to me!

I sell my cards for $2-$5 per piece - depending on the time,product, etc involved. I discount larger orders and charge more for one of a kind special occaision cards - created just for the individual. I sell 12 pk assortments for $20-$30 - depending on the cards included. HTH

I usually donated my cards as bingo prizes to an elderly day care. A couple of weeks ago, I went to a crafting reatreat where I was the only stamper. My friends were begging me to sell them. I didn't know what to charge but I saw that someone had been selling cards in a quilt shop for $2 each. That's what I finally decided on...ended up making an unexpected $30 that weekend. I did stamp them up with the angel stamp of course. I know others who sell her cards for $3 each. If I mass produce a bunch of the same card, I think $2 is fair cost. If I only made one, special for someone, I would charge more.

Hi! I have sold my cards at a few boutiques. I sell my cards for $2.50 a piece or buy 6 get one free. ($15.00 for 7.) I have actually had people complain they are too much! On the other hand I know people pay $5.00, so I figure I am right in the middle.
I have some cards on stock. Sometimes my friends will take my "portfolio" book to work and take orders! I sold several hundred dollars. I have also done baby shower, Christmas (I sold in $15.00 packs only) cards, just finished some bridal shower invitations. I also have a friend that sells Candles and she lets me sell cards at her open houses. I love doing it! Hope this helps out!

just one more question ~ if I am going to sell a group of "all occassion" cards - say birthday (male, female, kid), get well, thinking of you, anniversary, congratulations, etc. - maybe 5-7 cards, should I make them all with the same stamp set and generally the same colors, or totally different cards for each category above?

I recently sold my first pack. Someone asked for 10 birthday cards - I charged here $1.50 each (I know, underpriced but I never thought about selling before) I also included a blank "thank you" card. When she sent me that $, she added an extra $5 because she loved the cards so much.

That's always the toughest decision - what to charge. My husband always says that I don't charge enough. But it's so hard to find the middle road between too much and not enough!

I just had a friend of a friend request 15 grad cards and a bunch of misc. birthday cards for her teens' friends.

My friend came back today returning the very few that she didn't buy (but there had been multiples) and $70! I charged $2 each.

I also do thank you's, invitations for wedding showers and baby showers, birth announcements and also wedding invitations. I did a search on the internet for wedding invitations to get an idea on price, but there is such a wide variety that it didn't help much. You can get them for as little or as much as you are willing to pay.

My first invitation request was for my boss' wedding in 2002. I was so nervous but she absolutely LOVED them. I did thank you's and her wedding program as well. I did them for her at cost - my time and efforts as a gift to her. AND she got me a HUGE gourmet basket as a thank you because she loved them so much. And I've gotten some great follow-up (PAID!) orders because of her asking me to do her invitations!

If I'm doing it for a friend, depending on what I'm doing, I may do it as a gift, or I may just charge for costs and a small amount on top of that.

This is what I've finally come up with as a price list (though I'd probably reconsider the thank you's and Christmas cards to be $2):

Party/Shower Invitations and Birth Announcements:

5 x 7 invitations, 2 layers plus ribbon � $4/each
includes: matching stamped envelope

5� x 4� folded invitations
with color-coordinated backing - $3/each
includes: matching stamped envelope


Wedding Invitations:

5 x 7 invitations, 2 layers plus ribbon - $6/each
includes: matching stamped envelope, response card, response envelopes

Other items available:

Thank You Cards (5� x 4�)- $3/each

Place Cards � 4/$1.50

Wedding Programs - $1 each

Favor Tags � price depends on style, approx. 4/$1.00

Christmas Cards (5� x 4�) - $3/each

Of course prices are subject to supplies used - if they want to use the Brushed Gold cardstock (or some other specialty cardstock), there's definitely going to be an extra charge!

There are two copyright (note: that's copyright, not copyrighted -- all the SU! stamp images are copyrighted) stamp sets, Handmade with Love I and II, and also a small selection of personalized stamps that fulfill the copyright requirement. If you look at the catalog page that shows the personalized stamps that are available, you should see a little note near the ones that meet the Angel Policy guidelines.

WOW, this is a GREAT thread! A friend and I are making cards, notepads, mini albums, checkbook covers, paint cans, post-it ramps, and other items to sell at a craft show in November and this thread has some great information for pricing. I sell my cards for $2.00 each. I know, it's too cheap with all the work, card stock and embellishments, but around here, that is about all anyone will pay. I just love stamping so much, and think it is great that I can get paid for something that I love doing. I just have a mini craft business, and get business by word of mouth.

When I make a card, I usually make 5, one for a display book and 4 to put in my "inventory". Each card in the display books is numbered and people place orders by writing down the number of the card and how many on an order blank. Of course, each card is sold with a matching envelope. For each first order from a person, I put the cards in a clear plastic gusseted bag, and then into a stamped white bag with handles, tie shut with matching ribbon, and make a matching tag, which I leave blank in case they want to re-use the bag. From then on, each order of 12 cards or more gets a free bag. I usually stamp the bag to kinda match one of the cards inside.

Oh, and the inventory I have is GREAT for pulling out a card to send to my relatives for birthdays. I make the normal variety of cards, such as birthday, sympathy, thank you, thinking of you, just a note, etc. and also make several kinds of boxes and bag toppers.

Great idea about the card display book and about making 5 cards at once (1 for the book and 4 for your inventory). Have I mentioned lately that I just LOVE this thread?!

something to keep in mind, if people say that your cards etc. are at a "reasonable" price you are charging too little. My friends are artists, in their pricing workshops they were told if you hear people happy that your stuff is cheep you aren't charging enough. when they raised their prices they were concerned that no one would buy. Instead more people were buying!!!

I have been contemplating selling my cards for a while now...but wasn't really sure how to go about it. I love the idea of having a book for people to place orders from! That's an excellent idea! May I ask how you display the cards in such a book? (Plastic photo slots?? I dunno??) Also, when you do wedding invitations, baby announcements, etc. do you use the journaling CDs, or do you do it by hand?? Just curious. I would think that using a CD for the font would look less home-made and more professionally made? Unless you were going for a less formal look. (please don't take that as an insult if you do them by hand...I was just picturing my crappy handwriting on there!!LOL) Also, when doing invitations and such, do you use regular cardstock from SU, or do you buy more expensive stuff from somewhere else? Maybe someone would be so kind as to show me a couple samples so I can get the idea...I just can't seem to wrap my head around what a stamped wedding invitation would look like! I must not be very creative!! Wwwwaaaaaaaahhhhh!! LOL

by the way, when I said more expensive stuff from elsewhere, I was thinking like the stuff that has en embossed edging but it is blank where you could journal the stuff in or stamp or whatever....?

Wow what a coincidence! I just had a friend of my mother's ask for birthday invitations for her son's birthday. I was contemplating the price and thinking about posting a thread asking for help!

Anyhow, They are postcard type invitations white on red with a layer of Vellum attached by eyelets with ribbon through the eyelets (Elmo).

What is a decent price to charge? I tend to underprice because most of what I have sold has been to friends and relatives (My husband took the Valentine card I made him to work to show it off and then called asking for cards for the guys who forgot about Valentine's Day!! )
