We traditionally wait until December 13th. I can't even imagine starting in September **not that here is anything wrong about it*** but I decorate for Fall, Halloween, and Thanksgiving, plus birthdays and such. So, wow--September and a tree would definitely surprise me.
I do start to think a lot about Christmas around this time of year - I think a lot of us who make our own Christmas cards, decor and gifts HAVE TO in order to get it all done in time.
Every year we seem to put up our tree earlier and earlier but it's still too early for us! I'm still working on Halloween & Breast Cancer Awareness goodies! lol
However, I think if it's the earlier the better for you then forget what the neighbors are doing and enjoy your own prolonged Christmas season!! :-)

I love christmas! I put up 5 christmas trees at home (getting 1 or 2 more this year if hubby doesn't complain too much), plus one at work and 1 at my grandmas house. Each room has it's own tree and theme (ie kitchen tree has fruit, daughetrs tree matches the colors in her room). I start thanksgiving weekend and they stay up until the middle of January..... maybe I should start earlier......
If you're putting your tree up now, why don't you decorate it with fall colors? Then you can swap the decorations out with holiday colors when it gets closer to December. That is....unless you want to decorate it for Christmas now. I usually put mine up on Thanksgiving weekend.

That "fall colors" is a good thought. Jenn's Paper Trees would look fantastic in autumn colors.
I love it! I usually start putting up my artificial trees starting on October... I think it's never too early - if you do it early than you can enjoy it more AND it doesn't add to the stress of the holidays...
Now if I could just figure out how to keep the 13 ft live tree alive for more than a month I would put that up now!!!

I'm just starting fall decor now-pumpkins, gourds, etc. then towards the end of the month will go towards Halloween decor. I put up my Christmas decorations Thanksgiving weekend and take them down New Year's Day or thereabouts.
Ever since I was a little child, Christmas decorations went up Christmas Eve Day and the tree was decorated before we went to bed. Everything came down New Year's Day.
I still carry that tradition now with my little family as do my siblings with their familes. I start making my cards December 1st and mail them out the 15th.
Why rush things and miss the seasons and holidays before the end of the year?

I can decorate early and still not miss the other seasons and holidays. Actually, I have Halloween decorations up all year round as well. Those are two of my favourite holidays. And then in spots here and there are glimpses of Valentine's Day and St Patrick's day. *grin*
