Default Any shortcuts or tricks for cutting spinner cards

Help I doing my first SOLO workshop Monday evening and my dear "FRIENDS" want to do a spinner card!! yikes....that seems overwhelming since it's my FIRST solo workshop, I was worried what type of cookies to serve let alone making a working spinner card!

I looked in the gallery, plus saw some adorable ones at St Louis Regionals, but I am wondering any tricks to cutting out the rectangle???

I'm not good at cutting anyway and then for it to be perfect (so the thing will spin and not stick)I need some tricks, shortcuts, prayers, help, or shoot maybe I should just buy 5 cards and give them to them as gifts from you spinner PROS. LOL.

any suggestions would be so appreciated! I don't really want stick cards, I want spin cards and I'm sure my dear friends would like to have their spinner spin too....

thanks everyone

Do you have the slit punch? I use that to start the spinner guide. I punch the slit on one side of the card and punch it on the other side of the card and then get a ruler then draw a guide line from one end of the slit to the other end and then cut across with an exacto knife. Clear as mud? LOL

Holy cow! That's a fantastic tip! I was also thinking that there had to be an easier way to measure that. Thanks Jenn!

Another great tip is to use the 1/2" circle punch. Punch that on each end and just cut out the strip between them. o===o

It's a great way to show off some more of those punches!

our group did this spinner card at our last stamp camp for 180 people. what we did was took some time before the workshop to mark on our fiskars slide cutters where they would have to line up the paper to make the correct cuts. we used tape on the cutter and pens to make the little marks. so in all there were 4 marks. two on the clear ruler indicating the "starting point" of the slit, and one indicating the ending point. we explained that they were using the little arrow on the orange cutting blade to line up with the hash marks on the tape. it was important to be fairly accurate.

on the edge of the cutter that tells you the measurements of your cut (i.e. 4 1/4", 5 1/2"), we decided where we wanted to start, made our mark, then made the 2nd mark 1/2" from the first. so they just slid the paper over, then ran the blade down. (they do NOT take the paper out and flip it around for the 2nd slit).

then they used the paper snips to cut the slits out. i like the idea of the 1/2" to do this though.

i know it sounds complicated, but we really didn't experience any difficulty with the customers. they understood and were easily able to do this.

other tips? make sure if you are using the new dimensionals (now the packages only come in the 1/16" width) that you have them double them up - one on top of the other. otherwise there is not enough clearance for the image to actually spin.

another tip - make sure they do not put the dimensionals too close to the slit or the spinning part will get hung up on them.

hope that helps!!!!

Default Awesome

you all are wonderful!

I have the slit punch, so once dinner is over, I'll try my hand at it.

I have the round punch on my ever growing wish list so maybe it will have to be moved to priority! lol

thank you thank you for taking the time to respond

I made a template out of a piece of file folder. I lay that on my cardstock and then use a ruler and blade to cut out the center.

I have a Coluzzle cutter that is for borders (I think). It has both straight and scalloped guides. After I make my first cut, I move it down slightly and make the second cut. I like the idea of a circle punch to make clean edges.

I've never seen the tutorial that Daven posted before, but that is a great idea with the circle punch as well.
