Question Any one use Crayola Markers?

A friend of mine ask me why I don't use Crayola Markers when stamping. she said they don't cost a lot and have lots of different tips and have a lot of colors. I told her I did not know and was not sure if they would work. Have any of you used them or know if they would work. I did not know on water proof paper the paper you can get in the art department in the pads. do any of you think it would work. always looking for more markers haha.

I guess it depends on what you want them to do. If you currently use Copics or Spectrum Noir markers and enjoy coloring larger open areas with 2 or 3 colors to create a smooth blend giving the idea of shape and shadow; then Crayola markers won't do that.
Copics and Spectrum Noir are alcohol based which is what allows them to blend.
A cheaper alternative for alcohol markers are Bic permanent marker sets.
I do very little coloring. I tried for a while. Had invested in quite a few Copics until I finally realized I don't enjoy creating cards that way. I am more of a "stamp and go" crafter. So I sold my Copics and bought more stamps! I have a fine point set, and ultra fine point set of Bics that I can use for the little coloring I do. I can even find a few different shades of green for instance, to color a leaf with a little light and dark.

Crayola markers are water based. And many of them are washable (off skin anyway). They might work if you have very small areas to color, like a flower stem, and don't care about shading or blending multiple colors too much. Not sure how the washable ones would do on paper though.

I use mine for watercolouring in images, but I've never had an success colouring with them. As Muscrat said, they don't blend well. Unless your friend knows of a new alcohol ink based Crayola marker that I need...

I have used them and like them. But then I'm not into the whole art and perspective/shadowing concepts either. They work great, but not if you try to blend a large area. They are nice for water coloring and smooshing, and I have stamped with them. To color in a small stamp - they are perfect.

I picked up a set in a back to school sale and they were dirt cheap.

Thank you for all the info. I use Prismacolor marks at this time. I don't really blend not to good at that haha. so maybe they would work for me. I will have to try and see if I can also find the post on this. sure I miss it haha day late dollar short think that is how the saying goes. my friend dose not stamp at all. I was just looking at the markers and she thought I was nuts for paying that for one marker haha. thanks again for your info and would love if any one has any more about this.

Lindsay has a fun video using the markers for a direct-to-rubber technique:

I bought a box yesterday to play with, just for fun.

Are you mainly wondering about coloring on the stamps directly, or coloring in a stamped image?

I found if the paper you like doesn't take the water well, get one of those refillable paint brushes - like an aquapainter - and fill it with rubbing alcohol. It dries really fast.

I love Crayola, and have since I was a kid. I think I was more excited than my kids to go to the Crayola factory last summer! But, I don't generally use Crayola markers in my card making because I like a finer point than the large marker provides. I hadn't really thought about using them for watercolor or smooshing though. Now I will have to try.

One thing I HAVE done is use my dye reinkers with my Crayola marker maker! It comes with red, blue, and yellow ink that you can mix to make your own colors, but you can also use your own inks to make markers to match your ink pads. The newer version (with "wacky tips") is currently available on Amazon for less than $8 with prime shipping! (I actually added one to my cart when I went looking for a price just now!).

What a great idea. I'm running over there to put those in my cart also.

I wanted to share that at the same "dirt cheap sale" I picked up the kiddie markers, I also picked up a set of watercolor gel crayons. These are even better than gelatoes. I got them at Wally World or Target. The brand is Up&Up I think. They come in 8 colors and feel and move like Gelatoes for around $5.

Years ago, I was fascinated by a tutorial here on SCS that was titled "No Copics No Problem". Here is a link to the blog: No Copics ?? NO PROBLEM !! - Paper Pleasing Ideas

As noted in the blog post, there is a video and there also was a special section in the gallery with cards made with this technique: NCNP - Homemade Cards, Rubber Stamp Art, & Paper Crafts - Splitcoaststampers.com

yup...I like to use them to colour directly onto my stamps, spray with water and stamp.
I usually use Memento markers, but if I need a certain colour that I don't have in those, I reach for the Crayolas.

I used Crayola markers when I first started stamping. It was a good, cost effective way to color stamped images. I did get all the Stampin Up markers over time because they have paper to match.

One thing I noticed about the Crayolas, Stampin Up, and other water-based markers is that with larger images my coloring was streaky. I didn't want to invest in Copics, so I got a pack of Sharpies and Bic markers, which are alcohol based. You can get a good deal at Back to School time.

i got crayola markers recently for the color variety, &, aside for some very similar shades, i really love the great selection of colors. i may be an art supply snob but i was very disappointed by the quality. it was dificult to apply the color, the paper would easily pil from the wetness of the markers, the coloring didnt fill the area smoothly or nicely. i dont plan on getting copics (on principle i have a hard time accepting the price of $7 for one marker, or even $4 for the cheaper ones) but one day i would love to get a larger pack of zig writers or stabilos so i can have more color variety & quality

I looked up the Stabilos and watched a video by Julia Altermann on how to use them. Very interesting. I have no idea how to blend a water based marker so it was nice to see her technique.

Of course I checked the prices and was interested. 18 68-point pens for around $16. That is reasonable.

Thanks for posting about them.

Karen Barber colours amazingly with water-based markers...she has a tutorial in our Resources section: Marker Layering Tutorial - Splitcoaststampers

I've tried it a few times but I have to confess I mostly use mine for inking stamps.

Thanks for the tip on the Up&Up gel crayons. Picked up a package and am quite pleased. I have the basic Gelato set. It's nice to have some additional colors and I do love a bargain!!

I will have to also look in to the sharpies. do you use the water color paper I am guessing and also do they have a skin tone marker. I still have to go out and get some crayola markers. I will have to look for some of the sharpies and I will have to look at the Bic markers I have not seen them.

Here is a link to the Bics on Amazon. You get 36 markers for a reasonable price. They work well for coloring images, but the colors are pretty intense. I got this set, and filled in with a few pastel colors in Spectrum Noir markers, which are less than Copics.

These do not work for coloring directly onto a stamp, as they are alcohol markers.

Are you saying I can't color the stamp with the marker, then stamp it on paper?

Alcohol markers will just stain your stamps if applied directly. I have grown to love them for coloring images and currently use Michaels Recollections 110#. Check out the Copics thread Copic FAQ by ilikemarkers at Splitcoaststampers , it covers other alcohol markers, paper selection and more.

I have the 36 set of Bic markers along with the flesh tone set of Spectrum Noir. I've learned some tricks from a Frugal Crafter tutorial for marker blending that gives me any shade I want. She uses a tile to color on and then the alcohol blending tool to shade. It works very well. Check out the video. https://thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.c...ook-expensive/

I wonder if you ink your stamp first with Versamark if it will prevent the staining. I always ink my stamp first with Versamark when using Stazon ink and it wipes right off.

I guess you could - if you don't mind your stamps being stained. I've never used alcohol markers to color directly on stamps, so I can't say how it would work. I do know that alcohol evaporates pretty quickly, and the markers wouldn't be as "juicy", so I don't think the image would be very good.

Water based markers stay wet on the stamp surface longer, which is why folks like to use them for this technique.

I did not know they would stain the stamp. My stamps are stained anyway and I don't care personally. Good to know though.
