I bought a Basic Grey ink pad about 6 months ago and have used it about 6 times. went to use it today and it is dried out. I have talked to my demo but want to get another opinion/answer.
It is usually if it is within 90 days, they will replace it for you. However, I am betting if you give them a call they will send you a refill to ink it up with. They are so good with their customer service!
I've had this problem with the Basic Gray pad, and Basic Black. Both of those colors seem to have serious production problems. I wonder what your demo said?

No blog for me. My gallery chronicles my card-making successes and mishaps.
Tried to use my new-style black and gray pads the other day...both dry as a bone. The gray one was used once, the black one maybe a half dozen times. But I've had the whole batch of new pads since they first came out. I'm sure they won't replace them.
I'm totally not impressed. But my colored pads aren't doing the same thing...at least I don't think they are!
I always buy the reinker with any ink pad I buy. I am not saying a pad should dry out in a short time, but at least with the old style pads, I tended to ink often. I guess I like a juicy pad.
Someone told me that in Tim Holtz Creative Chemistry he suggests you can temporarily rejuvenate an ink pad by spritzing it with water. This is not a long term solution but if you need it at the moment it may work.
As much as I love SU inks and the colors, their new formulation dries out too fast for me and when you reink them, the pad takes the ink strange and it gets way too gloopy on my stamps. I'm just not happy with them in general. I pretty much switched to the Ginak K's dye inks and AMuse Studio's pigment inks.
I will say when I ordered the SU new pads and 1 arrived dry they sent me a reinker no problem, but your situation of 6 months later may be too long.

I'm not convinced the drying out is a function of usage but rather the new style pad itself. Mine dry out in spots and I mentioned above I can't get them to reink well. It just ends up too juicy and splotchy (even after blotting with paper towels) and they just don't stamp well.
I'm an SU demo and I've had the same experience with the Basic Black and Basic Grey in the new firm foam pads. The rest of my new firm foam pads are awesome, but I have found that you can't reink and use them immediately. It takes some time for the new ink to "settle in", at least that's my experience! SU sent me new Basic Black and Basic Grey inkpads. They'll make it right - be sure to call them and tell them about it!

You can't re-ink firm foam pad by putting reinker on them like you did with the linen pads. You re-ink firm foam by putting reinker on and spreading it with a spoon - this will keep you from getting blotches, etc. Here's a video showing you how.

Ohhhhhhhhh I didn't know this! I haven't reinked my new SU pads yet, so I'm glad you shared this info! Thanks, Lydia!
Out of curiosity I checked my Basic Gray pad which has never been used and it's bone dry! I sprayed it with Rangers ink refresher and worked it in with a spoon. After sitting a minute, the pad is now nice and moist, but there is no color. It's like all the dye has evaporated out! Some of my other colors are looking blotchy like they may be starting to dry as well. I haven't used most of these pads yet. This is concerning to see since I bought the whole set of new foam ink pads (right before the color change, arrgh!!). I've had the same Memento Tuxedo Black for 4 years which has seen fairly good use off and on. It's still going strong and I've only just purchased a re-inker for it. Do any of you feel your are having to re-ink your SU pads more than before?

I've done this when I didn't have a reinker and it works really well. Sometime it seems like they get dry but still have a lot of color. I wanted to use my Burgundy ink pad and didn't have a reinker and couldn't get one until my next stamp club so I spritz it just enough to get it wet and it stamped just fine. I think if you were to spritz it a lot it get to watered down.

The new SU! Foam pads are awesome and work so well for solid images. They do, however, hold less ink, and require inking more often. Especially if you are stamping a lot of beautiful bold solid images! but it also takes less to re ink them.
Having the re-inkers on hand is definitely a good idea.
Ranger makes an ink refresher spray that rehydrates ink pads. Perhaps you can try this and see if that will help your pad accept the reinker.
I've tried the refresher and didn't have great results. By the time I had enough spray to get the pad wet the ink color was diluted. Maybe it was just the kind of pad (cloth not foam) but I just rely on refills now.
Sounds like you might have used too much. You don't need to soak the pad with it. Just give 2 or 3 sprays and let it sit. Sorry, I should have given more details with it. Also, its not meant to replace inkers. Just provide a temporary fix for pads that have dried out, but still have ink in them. I just tried mine for the first time on my Basic Gray pad and will admit that so far, I am less than impressed.
I have old OLD pads that have never been re-inked (we're talking marvelous magenta, rose romance, etc) and they are still way juicier than some of my newer ones. I really could use some new colors but am very hesitant to but SU now.

I, too, had the issue of foam style pads not taking the ink into the pad like the old fabric style pads. My first experience was with a versacolor pigment pad (foam) that I needed to reink. I was horrified when the ink remained on the top in globs - even after letting it set for days, the ink remained suspended on the surface. After an online search for trouble shooting, I discovered that in order to get the ink into the pad, you need to give it some help. Take a disposable plastic spoon and gently rub the ink globbed on the surface with the back side of the spoon....the motion used is much like you would do to frost a cake. The ink will magically go into the pad and if you scooted it around to cover all the areas you will have a perfectly reinked pad. It won't be overloaded with ink and you won't have the problem of too much ink getting on your stamp when you go to use it.
When you are done with the reinking, you can wipe the ink off the spoon and put it in your tool jar to use next time. I wrote on the handle of the spoon with a sharpie marker that it was my reinking tool so that I wouldn't throw it away thinking it was trash. ;)
