I'm not sure which it is... But I finally bought 6 just to try. 3 pink and 3 blue and of course there weren't 3 of any of the same family so I bought 2 that matched and one that looked like it might match of each colour. Not too bad. Nice to colour with. Now I just have to wait for my Neenah Solar White and save some money to get some more Copics... for now I'll just play around with the six I have but I can see how you'd want more and more colours. Hmmmmm now I need to budget and use and allowance.... Any suggestions for colours you like?
OMG I'm so screwed! That's why I haven't bought any before this. I printed out the little sheet from Copic...to put all your colours on...and I could see how addictive they would become....150??? Somehow I could see that happening to me.
at least get them on sale! watch for the sales so you get more markers for you buck. Another way to go is get them in a pack of.... it's a little cheaper.
or
we have a nice art store in town and sometimes the markers are on sale so keep your eye open for that or get their email newsletter so you know when the sale is coming up.
I been quite happy with the 50 or so that I have. I bought the light, dark, and medium shades for the colors that I use most often and I use the empty CD case method for blending and making new colors. There may be a few additional shades I'll add but I don't feel the need to get them all. I also have most of my refills. Nothing is worse than having a copic run out in a middle of a project.
How fun!
Definitely get some greens and brown next.
I love the olive shades so I most often use green # YG91, YG93 and YG95,
for browns I use either E31, E34 and E37 or E21, E25 and E27 (I have to get E23 sometimes)
I know it can get really overwhelming with all the fun colors. I would just say get one color group per month/ twice month (2 to 3 markers once or twice a month), whatever works for you, and in a few months you will have lots of colors to play with and do your blending with etc.
I just bought my first Copics a few months ago and have about 70 now. I probably won't buy too many more. I went with the PTI suggested color combos and a few others. I love them but I don't want to overdo it and end up with a bunch that I rarely use. I find 70 or so gives me a really nice choice and fits my needs just fine. Now I have to start buying refills here and there.
I also bought the airbrush system and a compressor. I really recommend that! It totally makes the expense of these markers more justifiable.
I am just starting out with copics too, and I have to say I love to color with them...the smoothness and blending is great! Does anyone have a reference to the stampin up colors?
I started with a few trios that would work well together. I'm not that great at shading, still. Then I found a blog where she showed using the lightest color of a copic for your base, and using Prismacolors to shade darker. I have liked that technique really well. I do like the copics, and even though they are expensive, if coloring is something you really like, I think it can be worth it.
I started my collection about 3 yrs ago after taking a card class where Copics were used to color the images. Like them so much better that the other color pens because my paper doesn't pill and the colors blend so nicely.
I took several pens to my LSS and let her try them out. She said that some other customers were asking when she was going to start carrying them. She really liked how well they colored and blended and is now carrying some. Because she is a small one-person business, she can't carry all the colors but will order a particular color upon request when she places her replacement order. The prices in her store are really reasonable for this area. (Yes, we have had many of the local craft stores close.)
As to the colors to buy, I am not a great color artist so don't do the very fine, gradual shading that I have seen on some people's images. I buy colors that I know I will use and are within 1-3 numbers of each other in their color family. (i.e. RV21, RV 23, etc.) I suggest you buy some basic colors - black, brown and a blender pen. Also, various shades of yellow, green, pink, blue, a very, very light gray or blue for shadowing.
I have about 80 or so and there are about 40 or so more that I want so I have the PTI trios to make their cardstock and a few others that I really want.. After that. I wont have a need for any more. I have really gotten into coloring with Copics. It is just really relaxing.
Yes you are definately on the wagon, as am I... Started thinkig a few would be fine I know have all the colors except some Greys and the flourecents(sp). Enjoy them they are amazing!
Off topic but just wanted to say, I just looked at your blog Lori, love your coloring with the watercolor pencils!!
Thank you so much! I have to get back to blogging again. Been really busy elsewhere and until about 2 weeks ago all my art stuff was inaccessible.
Now I am just dying to get at it.
But I still can't blog because I also had a computer malfunction and can't get any pic in... well I guess I could write but no pictures of cards or art yet.
I am thinking of getting some skin tones next and maybe some greens and then see.
I'm definitely going to check out the PTI reccomendations. Does anyone know where to find it???
I really love the way Flourishes groups their copic color families.
Also Paper Maniac has a Copic club where you get a really great deal on sets of 8. There is no obligation, so you just buy the kit when you want.
Still not sure if I'm on the wagon or off of it.... Which is it when you're getting hooked on something??? Either way...8 more copics followed me home from the LSS tonight. OOPS!
Oh I'm TOTALLY on the wagon (or off?) lol! I have all but a few of the T's and W's and LOOOOOVE THEM! I'm lucky in that I live in Japan right now and get them a tiny bit cheaper than you do in the states. Had to get them while I'm here so I don't have to pay 5 bucks a marker, ha! You really have to practice with them but once you start getting your technique down, you won't be able to put them down, you'll dream about them, lmbo!
