They would prefer they receive thank you for your service and sacrifice, cards of encouragement or get well cards, but a few birthday cards sprinkled in would work too. From personal experience - please use colors other than red/white/blue and olive green - they get enough of that and would like to see something different for a change, especially olive green and military symbols.
In addition, thank you cards for the caregivers/medical personnel at Landstuhl would be nice.
SPECIAL RESTRICTIONS:
Absolutely no loose glitter or anything that "came from nature" like real twigs or leaves. Please make the majority of your cards without items that will melt at 150-degrees, such as glossy accents and stickles, as some of these cards will be sent to the middle east to the clinics there. Please avoid military equipment, as that may trigger a bad memory of an incident involving that piece of equipment and I'm sure that's not the effect we're going for.
MAILING ADDRESS:

A LITTLE BACKGROUND INFORMATION::
This month's recipient is near and dear to Michelle's heart. Michelle herself was treated at Landstuhl Medical Facility following injuries she sustained in Iraq. She was treated at Landstuhl along with many many many other wounded warriors. In Michelle's own words:
After being injured in Iraq in 2004, it was the doctors and nurses at Landstuhl Medical Center who literally saved my life. There were 2 doctors and 6 nurses deployed to Balad, Iraq who gave me the treatment I needed to breathe, let alone walk after breaking my neck. Today, I am functioning just like a "normal" person, and unless I told you this happened to me, you would never know. While I only did a short stint in rehab at the hospital, it was the doctors from there that I am forever indebted, and for that reason, I ask that you remember to thank these servicemen, servicewomen, and civilians for their sacrifice, as well. They are under tremendous stress and are the among the greatest heroes in the world in my eyes.
A local Stampin' Up! Demonstrator made some cards that got me interested in stamping and brought a smile to my face. I would love to be able to brighten the day of my fellow servicemen and women, and include the medical staff who literally save lives daily. Walter Reed gets all the attention, but it is Landstuhl who houses the most critically wounded.
Thank you Michelle, for giving us the opportunity to help you in this wonderful cause! You should be commended for your service to our country and the time you were there for all of us!
Fellow SCSer's, thank you for spreading your SCS love! Please feel free to mail your cards all throughout the month of Mayl! Once you have mailed them come back to us here and let us know they have gone postal!
Thanks, lady, for allowing me to sponsor this month! And thank you to all my fellow scs'ers who always come thru for our service members!!!

Some of these cards will be going to clinics in the Middle East, so I would avoid anything that melts at 150-degrees, like stickles and glossy accents. It makes it easier to sort the cards for the Chaplain team.
But loose glitter is an absolute no no. As we know it gets everywhere, and some of the recipients may have open wounds that the glitter can get in and cause infection.
Just want to keep our heroes safe and give smiles not tears!

Are these cards to have our own personal message in them or are they to be blank for use by the patients or staff?
However you are inclined. Personally, I will be doing both.

So personal note on a post-it? Or some with notes and some without?

And does any adhesive do especially well or especially poorly in those temps?
I'm going to look through my cards first and see if I have anything that will work and then try to make a few.

Pop dots aren't too happy, but they just smoosh and flatten, not really affect the rest of the card.

And sorry for all the questions, but just cards? Or are bookmarks and notepad type things ok as well?

I must be really tired because for some reason that totally cracked me up!

Anything small that would bring a smile to someone's face is a-okay! I think bookmarks and notepads would be fabulous! Libraries and other charities send a lot of books. I would just ask that you include pens with your notepads because we all know those are always hard to come by when you need one

Groovy. I will do my best to get some things in the mail. Thanks bunches! For everything.

I will probably be sending blank cards for others to give to someone else. Will the staff and family of the injured be the ones picking these up?
Some will have family members there, but most will not. Since most of the critically wounded come from combat zones, their families are all over the globe. The team of Chaplains (military religious team) will be distributing these to the wounded and the hospital staff.

I'm happy to take part in this month's cause! My hubby was in the Air Force and is currently employed as a civilian for the AF DOD, so he was proud to hear I'm participating and is telling all the guys he works with. Regardless of that, I just think this is a wonderful thing for us (and you!) to do and my only hope is that the cards bring smiles to the faces of those who receive them!
Hugs and thanks for all you've done.
Maggie

Michelle, Thx so much for your service to our great country.
And thx for thinking of this way to thank those still there. I'll be making a package of cards to send. Glad you thought to include the staff. As a nurse, I can tell you, thx don't come often and mean so much. And I don't do it under hostile conditions so my hats off to them.....

Thank you Michelle, for being here to answer all of the questions. And thank you EVERYONE participating! Its nice to see that there is so much interest already. I think this will be a very successful month. Its always good to see appreciation being sent to those who are serving our country!
I think these are fine, but just want to double check - are spica pens and shimmer sprays ok?

I would say yes to spica, but keep it thin with the shimmer, so it doesn't flake off.

Ok. I was going to use a scrap piece that had shimmer spray on it, but I will just use that for something else. I'd rather not risk it. Thank you!!! I pulled 11 cards last night from my stash that I think are appropriate and glitter free. Made a bookmark today and will go from there.

I absolutely LOVE your bookmark idea. I will be making some myself.

I just recently joined this site, and this is the first thing I am going to participate in. I was stationed at Ramstein and my oldest son was born at Landstuhl. I worked at the thriftstore on base for a while and we donated clothing to the hospital. I just had a quick question... do we sign the cards or leave them blank?? Thanks for your help! Patti

I have to say - Your little bat avi is killing me! Ok, got that out of my system... So glad you're going to participate! You can sign, write a message, or just leave them blank - whatever you are motivated to do.
Thanks!

Whew! Okay, I just sent out 17 cards in this morning's mail. Here is a picture, but it doesn't include all 17 of them, as I made some more after I snapped the pic. Anyway, I made a mixture of blank inside, get well, thank you, thinking of you, and a few happy birthday. I didn't sign them so they can be reused by whoever needs a card at the time. I did, however, put my "made by" stamp on the back.
Love the bookmark idea! Wish I had thought of that. ;) Well, this is only the first week of the month, so I still have plenty of time to do some!
Again, thanks for such a great cause and with Bin Ladin dead now, I'm praying that the war will be over soon and everyone will be back home with their loved ones again!

Are envelopes needed for the cards that are sent with a personal message?
No, these are cards for them, not for them to send out.

Wait, they don't need to be in envelopes?? Holy cow, that will up the number I'm going to send! I'm almost out of A2 envelopes and will procrastinate going to Walmart for more as long as possible!!!

These will be given directly to the injured service man or woman. If they are sent to the clinics in the middle east, they will still be given out directly. No envelopes needed.

Hi Michelle! Hi Everyone! Just checking in here.....wowza! Such a good start already! You guys rock! Happy Mother's Day to all! Whether you are one or not, have a Happy Mother's Day anyway! Hugs....
Would sending mildly humorous or "pun"ny cards (instead of thank you or get well cards) be ok? I live with multiple health issues and chronic pain and often prefer humor over words of sympathy or get well wishes - for a few minutes, at least, I'm a normal person laughing at normal jokes.
I've been making cards for our troops with Operation Write Home, and recently began designing a series of humorous cards to send to injured heroes. The humor is mild and not sexually, racially, or ethnically based. I haven't been to this thread in ages, but seeing this month's mission, I had to whoop for joy - now I can ask someone who's truly been there... Would these cards be ok to send to Landstuhl?
Also, can these cards be thick, lumpy and bumpy, since they're not going thru USPS sorting machines?
As long as the humor is in good taste, like you have outlined above, it should be ok. They can be lumpy, since you are correct, they will not be going thru the mail. Please make sure everything is attached VERY well, since they do have a long trip to make. I will be putting mine that have lots of pieces in clear envelopes.

I have so many cards that I've made in the last 2 months Michelle and I'm painstakingly going thru them to brush/blow/swipe off any glitter from sitting next to other cards I've made or just generally on my stamp table. But then it occurred to me that it still might not be safe enough so I thought I'd check in and ask you that first. You won't hurt my feelings if you tell me no. I'll just make some up to send, it just won't be nearly as many but I'm fine with that.
