DESCRIPTION: “For many children, birthdays are considered to be one of the most important days of their lives. While a number of organizations help make holidays special, far fewer focus on birthdays. This may leave some disadvantaged children unable to fully celebrate their special day. BrighterBirthdays’ mission is to change this. Founded in 2017, we are a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) service organization dedicated to giving underprivileged children brighter birthdays.
Underprivileged children with upcoming birthdays are identified by their schools. We provide these students with birthday bags filled with party supplies, treats, crafts, toys and basic living essentials. All of this is made possible through caring supporters who donate items, make financial contributions or give generously of their time.”

TYPE OF CARDS REQUESTED: they are requesting zip lock bag toppers.....PLEASE READ MORE INFO BELOW!
A bag topper still takes half a sheet of card stock - but instead of a card shape, it's cut 4 1/4 by 11 and scored long ways. cut off 1/4 inch of the length. decorate as desired. Makes a great simple use for retired card stock.

There have been groups that will send thank you's but the "referred by" person keeps us informed and passes on the thank you's. they were putting a birthday plate and napkin and birthday card loose in the backpacks and it was getting crumbled. This year, they decided to bag ziplocks instead and put the plate, napkin, card, party 'blower' and a couple other small items in the bags.below are some samples.

This is an awesome idea! I'm happpy to join you guys in making some. Reallly have to get my thinking cap on to come up with some ideas for these. One question, do they need to be as simple as the ones in the examples? Or can they be more elaborate with three dimentional decorations? Just wondering if making them more elaborate will get them destroyed in the back-packs like they said the original items were.

I noticed this post has my address from the February cause. Please wait for Linda’s address before mailing the toppers! Otherwise this sounds fun and I’m off to get ideas to make toppers!

? About the directions- cutting 1/4. Does that mean the measurement is actually 4 x 11. Can we round the corners, use edge dies on the bottom? Thanks
GOOD QUESTION: The actual dimension is 4 1/4 by 10 3/4 folded in half the long way. You'll see it overhangs by a bit if you try it on a gallon Zip lock bag!
You can round the corners, use edge dies, 3 d is fine - sky is the limit! We just did quick simple ones for an example - you get as creative as you like.
If you participated last year, I HOPE you saw the thanks on that thread. The response was OUTRAGEOUSLY WONDERFUL. I tear up every time I tell someone about you guys - YOU ARE AMAZING! And I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Today is Brighter Birthdays 3rd Birthday. We're having a party for all our donors and supporters. I wish you could be here! Here's the card I made for everyone to sign
Would it be okay to to do a 4 by 10 3/4? I would love to use up 12 by 12 paper.

One last question - do you know the age groups that they do these for? Just for kids? For teens too?

I love you guys! DSP I fine. 4 inches is fine. Age group is Pre-K though 6th grade.
We've been asked to do a middle school but I don't know if the board has approved that yet.
We are also doing now BABY packs for newborns of teen moms but they get wipes, diapers and stuff like that. (those moms are little more than kids themselves.)
Thank you for all that you do, and have done in the past - not only for Brighter Birthdays but for ALL your charities!!!
I have nine made to date. I bought a box of Ziploc bags that I'll be sending, 19 count so I'm making 19 toppers. Some I have posted here.
They are so much fun to make.

Wow, the toppers you made are truly awesome!

Sorry I've been among the missing - i'm sure everyone has had the week from heck at some point. Mine would have the nose blowing, coughing emoticon plus my hubby had surgery on Tuesday. Everyone will live, but oh the disruption.
Thank you so much for all the interest in making the bag toppers! When Brighter Birthdays came to me with the request I wasn't so sure if It could be fulfilled - but your enthusiasm gives me hope! I'm making with a key club at a local high school on Wednesday.
I had fun making these, its a nice change of pace from cards. I have 30 ready to go. It got kind of addictive making them so I may make more. I would like a little advice in how to mail them because they are longer in length and narrow in width I don't want them to get bent. I am wondering how others have mailed them.
Hi,
I mailed 10 toppers and about 5 birthday cards last week. I used a 9" x 12" kraft clasp envelope and put them all between 2 pieces of a slightly heavier weight cardboard (like cereal box weight) to keep them from shifting or getting damaged. Hope that helps.
Sent mine last week. I believe there were around 50 of them. I enjoyed this different challenge.

I've got 24 bag toppers on the way today - #9405503699300453933671.
I wish there were more, but between work, funeral arrangements and taking over of MIL's personal care, affairs and finances, I've had precious little time to take care of what i want to tend to.
OMG I just got the packaging for return addresses from what all y'all sent! THANK YOU so MUCH! Your thank you cards will be in the mail shortly . It's fun, isn't it? Gives a little bit of perspective to how our work is constrained by shape, hmm?
Meanwhile - Tuesday the Armuchee key club made bag toppers. Can you say MESS? But everyone had fun, and they cranked out 103.
I hope everyone is having fun! Someone asked the question - can we still use cards too? YES! But we have a little back stock of cards and we don't of the toppers. Everything is gratefully received!
Finally managed to pop mine in the mail yesterday. Yes, the different shape of this (as opposed to a card) was fun! Do you know, I had hit a lull and wasn't really creating much of anything. Something about this project got me going again. So thank YOU for this request!
