Last month, we started a little study of horse gaits (revisit the walk here). This week, we are going to turn up the speed a notch to the trot! (Reminder: if you don’t want to “nerd out” with me - feel free to just skip ahead to the sketch… no harm done!:smile)
The trot is a two-beat, symmetrical gait where the horse springs from one diagonal pair (left fore with right rear/right fore with left rear) to the other with a moment of suspension in between. Faster than the walk, it is often referred to as the "jog" (especially in western riding) and is performed in nearly all types of riding disciplines. Due to its increased speed and therefore energy, it's often used when teaching the horse a new movement, where the extra momentum may help them better understand what the rider wants as well as use their bodies appropriately and to their full advantage. It's a wonderful gait to use to assess a horse's symmetry as well as his rhythm and is often a go-to gait that veterinarians use when diagnosing lameness.
There are many "speeds" within the trot, anything from the slow, "marshmallow jog" (as I call it) of a western pleasure champion:

to the incredible feats of strength and high-level training of the dressage horse (such as the piaffe - essentially a trot in place:

and the extended trot -a very floaty, ground-covering pace: A working trot falls somewhere in the middle and is a great place to start developing a movement or pattern from (a favorite of mine for this very purpose!). I’ve also included a couple pictures (old ones!) of Dreamer, my gelding, and I trotting for some still views.
This week's sketch is a reflection of the very noticeable shift the rider feels from hip to hip as her horse moves beneath his or her body (great for unlocking the rider's stuck hip joints, I might add! ).

Thank you for another fun sketch and I loved to read and watch the videos it's always great to learn more about horses, I thought my fun fold would work for this For The Horse Lovers
