My family and I are moving from PA to Gilbert, Arizona. Just found out we got the house we wanted and it's a go!!! We're all so excited, we're headed out the first week of July. Now I have 3 weeks to finish packing...ugh! Any of you in the area that have any info to share - I'd love it! This is quite overwhelming, but I just can't wait!

I'd like to know, too! We aren't necessarily planning to move there, but the thought had crossed our minds. I need to be somewhere where the average of sunny days per year is more than 66, but we don't want tons of humidity with the heat, either. TIA!
Be prepared for the heat in July! I'm further south...down in Tucson. Drink LOTS of water so you don't get dehydrated...if you wait till you're thirsty it means you already are dehydrated.
There are a lot of nice SBing shops in the PHX area but you'd have to find someone that lives up there. Or search the main forum...I know other people have asked for stores.
Yeah! I'm in Queen Creek. Really close to Gilbert. I would love to meet you once you get here and get settled in. I have a monthly scrapbook/stamping get together and would love for you to come. Oh, by the way.....you will LOVE Gilbert!

I looked at some houses in Queen Creek....loved the town, but I was afraid of the commute if I have to work in Phoenix (which it's looking like I'm going to do). So we settled on a house in Gilbert. I'd definitely like to get together with you. I'll be in touch.
Thanks everyone for the well wishes!!

WE moved from Machesney Park IL to Las vegas a few years ago. It was the easiest move I ever made. I cant imagine how it was easier to move across the country than it was to move across town. But it was. We love it here! Good luck on your move, new home and new life!
I live in Glendale which is to the West of Phoenix.
It is definetely HOT here, your first summer will be the worst--then it gets better, don't go out without sunscreen EVER!! The sun will fry your skin quick!!! Since I am originally for upstate NY I relate AZ summers to East Coast winters( you don't go out unless you have to). no one really goes out much unless it is to somewhere that is cool. But our winter the weather is BEAUTIFUL and everyone is out and about. I hope your move goes well.
Congrats on your upcoming move to AZ. I hope you love it as much as we do. We moved here in 1979 with two daughters, 9 and 5. We lived in VA for four years before my husband retired and then scooted our behinds back to the Valley of the Sun. Our daughters are grown, married and we have three grandchildren, so that was a motivating factor to move back. Even with that factor, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.
The will be very different from you have experienced before, but the fall, winter and springs are wonderful. It gets hot early in the year and may stay hot into October, but the evenings are generally tolerable in the hottest months and very comfortable the rest of the time. Winters won't seem as cold at first, but after you acclimate, plan on wearing sweaters or coats.
Oh yeah, that reminds me. The stores, restaurants and movie theaters are pretty chilly during the late spring and summer months. It is so hot outside that it seems even colder. I have gotten to carrying a light jacket or long-sleeved shirt in my car for these occasions.
I live in Glendale which is on the other side of the Valley from you, but have been here long enough to give pretty good information about the general area. Feel free to PM me and we can chat via email. I will give you some general information about the layout of the Valley which might be helpful.
You will absolutely LOVE AZ. Born and raised in MN. Lived in NJ, NC, Iowa, and France. While all of those places were wonderful AZ tops the list. Good luck on your move and safe travels.
Congratulations on moving to Arizona! I live in Ahwatukee (the south side of the city) and really love it here. Gilbert is about 20 minutes away from us to the east. I have lived here for 21 years and love it!
I agree with the above, always carry water with you in the summer. The stores are cold, so carry a light jacket, and your first summer will be the worst. You will wonder why you ever decided to live in this heat....but it really does grow on you. We have no humidity to speak of, 5-10% in the summer, so you really don't sweat, it evaporates so quickly. Therefore all the more reason to stay hydrated.
I love the friendly people (everyone is from somewhere else, mostly the midwest), the palm trees, the sunny skies, and there is so much to do.
Welcome to the Valley of the Sun!

We used to live in Tucson and I adore it (I was born and raised in PA!!). It is a wonderful place. I wish you a safe and happy move. If you ever get down to Tucson you have to eat at Sanchez Buritto Co.!!!!
oohhh..oooooohhhh...soooooooooooo jealous! I am originally from Texas but now in PA! Although I love the change of seasons, you can't beat the awesome weather in the winter months and you will LOVE the BLUE, BLUE, BLUE skies. Sigh...best of luck. You will love it!
Welcome to Arizona!! I live in a very small community called Hayden. We are located right between Phx and Tucson. So we make trips to both places on the weekends. I don't think there are many scrapbooking places in Tucson and the only one I go to your way is called the Scrapbook Barn. If anyone knows any good rubberstamp stores, I would love to know where they are too! Have a safe trip!!
I live in Chandler, which is right next to Gilbert. I have been out here eight years (from TN/AL). The summers are REALLY hot, but don't have much humidity. I would love to hear from you when you get here. Please feel free to contact me before, during, and after your move with any questions! If I don't know the answers, I can find someone who does. Oh, the tap water tastes awful here! People don't carry around bottled water just for looks!
I am in Peoria near Glendale from the poster above. I moved here from Michigan 22 years ago and I never went back. I don't miss driving in the snow or the tornadoes We get monsoons here which amounts to a lot of wind dust and occasionally a few drops of rain in the summer. Gilbert is a nice area. Welcome to the state of perpetual sunshine!
Just figured I would give an update today here in AZ it was 107 HOT HOT HOT but the humidity was 7%. SO make sure you have lots of light weight clothes and LOTS of water!! yesterday was hotter and someone(tourist) had to get rescued off a mountain because they thought they could climb it and dehydrated before they even got 1/2 way up.
BE VERY CAREFUL when you first arrive DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!
If you feel thirsty it's already to late and it hits fast and hard.
Yeah! I'm in Queen Creek. Really close to Gilbert. I would love to meet you once you get here and get settled in. I have a monthly scrapbook/stamping get together and would love for you to come. Oh, by the way.....you will LOVE Gilbert!

That is so cool, I went to QC High, and my dad still lives in QC.. I live in FLorida now.
I have a second home in Casa Grande Arizona. We're not exactly "snowbirds" as we go back and forth frequently all year long. My best friend lives there. I have to mention that we moved last July from our original home in Casa Grande to another (with a stamproom!) and it is really a hot time for moving. Our first home had sold the first day we offered it. We had a little over a week to move as the new owner was a school teacher and wanted to get settled in before school started. My husband became heat stressed despite drinking lots of water. It was actually humid! ...and we went through 3 dust storms in 2 weeks. Despite that I love Arizona and the people there are geat! By the way...I noticed you love Key West ;) My son has a little cafe there. The Iguana. He's still rebuilding after the hurricane two years ago. It's beautiful but...there is that downside. You'll love Arizona! Good luck!!!
Thanks everyone, for your suggestions and well wishes. Packing is coming along fairly well. Except when my 5 year old keeps pulling things out that I've packed....lol!! Anyway, we're still very excited about the move. We've been watching the weather channel and seeing the temps. But we haven't changed our minds.

OOOOO I'm so jealous! We lived in Phx. (Deer Valley area) over 23 years. I had friends, church, etc. I became a new demo last August. Then disaster struck. My husband decided we should move to Arkansas to be near my oldest daughter. He has health prob and closer to family, yadda, yadda. yadda. Well, that was mid August. Talk about culture shock! Biggest thing going is Wal-Mart. I am still struggling and getting any leads for my business is nil. I keep putting feelers out and maybe one day..... I miss Phx. and can only pray I'll go back. You will love it! Yes, summers are hot, but it beats the humidity. SUNSHINE, SUNSHINE, SUNSHINE! No bugs, mosquitos eating you alive, tornados, rain everyday. Enjoy it. Can I go too?
Oh, I forgot to mention the people! FANTASTIC! You will never have a prob making new friends. I guess larger towns are like that. There are wonderful demos there. Put your name out there, contact other demos in the area and watch your firndships burst into bloom!
I'm in Arizona City just outside of Casa Grande - Gilbert is not that far from me...We move here 3 months ago from Massachusetts. It's hot here now, water is definitely a must. The best times to be outside are before 10 am and after 6 or 7 pm I've found.
I love it here though! I love meeting other demos who live around me! Let me know when you arrive, I'd love to meet up some weekend once you are settled!
Wow you are about the 10th person I know that is moving to AZ. The employment must be good there as here in MI-jobs are scarce.
Good Luck packing and unpacking.
I just need to chime in as well because I live in Phoenix, and love it. The hardest part for kids is that in the summer it's pretty much impossible to go to the park because of the heat, even early in the morning. The rest of the year is great, however. Welcome to the area!
Robin welcome to Arizona. I hope your move is going smoothly. We moved to Chandler six years ago and are right on the border of Gilbert. In fact we are just a street away from officially being Gilbert. This is a really nice community. You will love Gilbert there are a lot of young families there. In fact I think it is the youngest (children wise) city in Arizona. Like everyone says in July when you come it will be hot and don't expect it to get much below 100 until October but then you will love it. The kids can actually wear cute Halloween costumes without wearing long johns underneath. There are a lot of fun things to do in Gilbert too there are a ton of public parks there that have splash pads my kids also love the summer movies at the Gilbert theatre and the zoo and science museum are great fun as well. I hope you move goes smooth and pm me if you would like more info!
Welcome to AZ! I live in a small town NW of Phoenix,Morristown. You will love it here! We moved here in 1990 from OK and have never looked back! Yes, the summers are VERY hot but wouldn't trade it for the winters of ice & snow or the springs of tornadoes!LOL I can deal with this heat & no humidity easier than I can deal with 96 degrees and 80% humidity! Like those before me said drink LOTS of water. You will quickly learn to do outside chores very early in the morning Have a safe move
I know you are all going to freak when you here this but we have a second home in Vail, AZ. This is sort of a pre-retirement type thing. Also my dd and her dh and ds's live in Tucson. We were visiting so often we were wearing out our welcome. anyway, Gilbert is between Tucson and Phoenix. Nice area. You will like it, I am sure.
Congratulations, Robin! I wish you an safe and happy move.
I lived 13 years in Bakersfield, Ca, but always knew I'd end up back in the land of rust. I was born and raised in Washington State and had a hard time dealing with the heat down south.

Well don't come MY way then! LOL! We've scarcely had a handful of warm days this summer.

Welcome to AZ!!! The greatest thing about southern AZ is there are no tornados, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanos, serious floods (like on a river), drastic changes in the weather from one hour to the next, winds than blow 50 mph (like NE), snowstorms, hail the size of golfballs, and other weird stuff. I love the predictability of the weather. The downside is IT'S HOT (just move from 1 air conditioned place to another) and there is no water (lakes, etc) or much green stuff around to see.
Phx area is about 5 to 7 degrees hotter than Tucson where I live. Today was 107 here, I think.
And, by the way, the only remaining stamp store in Tucson (Stampin' Sanity) is closing in July. Just Michael's now.
Hi, my name is Kresta Huston and I live in Queen Creek, AZ (East of you). Welcome to AZ...you will love it, if you like the heat. it's 111 today. You get used to it. :-)
Welcome to AZ. I live in South Gilbert - just south of Williamsfield - any questions on the schools - please let me know. I have 2 in Elementary and one in H.S..
