I bought the Holiday papercrafts issue today using a 40% coupon, and the cashier told me that starting the 14th, they would no longer be allowing coupons to be used for magazines. So, if you're waiting to purchase one of those 14.99 "special" issues, now's the time to scrounge up a coupon and head in there to get it! Major bummer for me, because I will NOT be forking over 14.99 -- I'll just pass on the magazine at that price.
My Michael's has been doing this for a couple of weeks. They come up as "on sale" for .01 less than the retail price, so that you cannot use a coupon on them. I agree with everyone else. I won't be buying magazines from them anymore. Even with the 50% off, the Cards magazine is still $10. It's AC Moores for me! And maybe it's time to get a subscription. ;)
:( This is just another example of how they have continued to p*** me off.First they put crazy restrictions on using coupons, canceled the classes like beading and One Stroke painting etc. Now no coupons for mags!? I'am not sure about everyone else, but I sure can't afford some of my fav mags without a coupon.I'am headed there this morning to return some items and pop across the street to AC Moore.
Nope big M's wont miss me and my few hundred dollars a year. But at the rate they are going and making the shopping experiences more and more unpleasant,a lot of their customers wont be missing them either.
I tried to use a PC-printed coupon a couple of weeks ago on a magazine and was told it wouldn't work. That coupon didn't have any 'zine/book restrictions, but I see the new coupons do. I refuse to buy these full price, so they'll be losing my business too.
JoAnn ticks me off also - they have a big 'sale' with multiple coupons, but mark the 'zines down 10%, so the coupon can't be used. Most of the time all the other things I'd buy are also marked down 30%, so I have to wait until they go back to full price so I can use a coupon - crazy!

THANK YOU for the heads up on this!! How sad I would have been to put my treasure (Take Ten) back because I couldn't bring myself to pay the full price!
I'm happy with the 20% off total purchase coupons for the Bazzill paper and other new shiny things I find there!

Yeah...I might buy an occasional $5.99 magazine, but no way would I pay full price for them all the time, or ever for the more expensive ones. They're just way too overpriced!
This is often what I use my coupons on too since they never seem to get anything new in (or very rarely anyway). Wonder if it's just magazines or also craft books since the markup is about the same?
It's so funny (well to me anyway). My DH and I sit around and read through the exclusions on a particular dept. store's coupon. It seriously takes a long time. I almost wet my pants every time from laughing so hard!
Michael's is starting to get that way too. Too bad they won't get me to buy their magazines w/o a coupon.
Wonder why Mich's can't or doesn't get any NEWER Cuttleubg folders in -like HL does?? The mags & books were the last thing left for me to go into Mich's for!!
It has been forever since I have purchased much of anything at mike's.....even with a 40% off coupon I can't find anything new and exciting...they have the same cuttlebug stuff as they did two years ago, same boring stamps, same inks....boring and I have it all anyway. If online shopping didn't exist I'd be in real trouble. At least the magazines changed, but now we can't use coupon on them so I guess Mike's is one stop I don't need to make anymore unless I need refills for my xyron. I guess adhesives will probably be the next thing coupons can't be used on.
Its funny I was just commenting the other day how there are no new "issues" on the stands at my M's. I bet they will appear on Sunday when you cant use any coupon on them. I agree about them not having any new good items. I almost choked when i saw the bazzill paper but of course its .69 so it will never be on sale. Even my LSS has the bazzill paper for .60 I think they really dont want to keep customers. For all the hassle its not worth it. Customer service is everything to me and M's has gotten out of hand.
I subscribe to many scrapbooking and card making magazines (probably every one that is available) and the "Special "issues are not included which is a bummer because you still have to purchase them at a stand if you want them..........I emailed Paper Craft magazine and this is where I got the information....
yeah, I saw that. I have their 50% off one to use today and it clearly states on there it can not be used on magazines. Also can't be used on books or Cricut products...not that I have a cricut.
I forgot to mention......I buy my magazines at Barnes & Nobles. They have ones from the UK. But, some of them are listed at $15.00. I refuse to pay that. I buy the ones for $9.99 and you get free scrap papers and other goodies.
I scanned this thread earlier and was prepared for the no magazine situation at Michael's but I was going to buy a book and found out it applied to them as well. I've been very disappointed in their stock (or lack thereof) in many of the craft areas of interest to me. Now that they are putting so many restrictions on their coupons, they are giving me no reason to actually set foot in the door. I'll go to Joann's across the street where they are more accomodating.
This new decision really bums me out. I don't buy that many magazines any more, but there is occasionally one I really want. Of course, I will spend more in the store when I buy my magazine, but now that option isn't even open to me.
Interesting how they seem to be doing less for their customers instead of more.
I used to buy magazines with my coupons. But a few months ago, I decided to utilize only free resources for ideas and only buy product from myself. I still have way more ideas and product than I have time to use and I haven't wasted a trip to Michaels in months!
I was reading the post and thought you ladies might want some insight into Michaels. I work in one of the Canadian stores so I would like to help you out with some information....
Coupon:
If you go to Michaels.com and sign up for the newsletter/ weekly advertisement you will start to receive not only the flyer into your email but you will also receive coupons like 20% off your entire regular priced purchase and the 50% coupon that started this posting.
Magazines:
The company just brought it back saying that the coupons could not be used on books, magazines, and kits that are in a book form. My suggestion to everyone who reads this is to write to Michaels and let them know what you think. The staff working in the store are just as annoyed as you the customer since we too use the coupons to buy our hobby magazine of choice.
I did write Michael's about my feelings and referred them to this thread so they could see the impact, if they really are interested in the information. And it wasn't just the coupon, either. It was the lack of turnover in product and never seeing new product in the store. I hope they're paying attention.

I hope this helps. MIT Handcrafted
This is a really good idea - I'd focus on saying that it generates lots of sales for Michaels when you have to buy stuff to make the cards in the mags!
I wonder how the other crafters out there are reacting to this? It's the first restriction on a coupon that is not papercrafting related.
This is what I get for not checking the forums before I go to M's!!
I was all excited to see the new October Cards mag, and use my coupon when i check out and then the cashier droppped the bomb on me NO Coups on Mags!! WAAAAA ! i really wanted my new copy of Cards!!!!
I did get some cute stuff on clearance for my little cousins for Christmas.
M's is really going down the drain.....
Fingers crossed that JoAnn's doesn't follow suit because the one near my work has TONS of magazines, and not just craft mags. The Michael's by me has hardly any magazines anyway, so now there is absolutely no reason to go there. I will be sending an e-mail to their corporate headquarters protesting this change.

Makaren
and ditto again!!!
Mike's has gone way downhill in the variety of products they carry-they have since become the dollar store of crafts stores. I would go for magazines (which some they have stopped carrying) so I now have no use to shop their any longer, not to mention the store I shop in has the least friendly employees around.

This is so true! I bought a copy of Take Ten from M's last month, then went out to the car to wait for my friend who was still inside shopping. I thumbed through the magazine and noticed quite a few cards that used a particular Cuttlebug folder I'd been contemplating buying. So I ran inside and bought the CB folder, all because of seeing them in the magazine I just bought from them USING MY 40% OFF COUPON!!!
I am glad this post exists and I hope everyone does write to Michaels. I know I will.
Every month I buy the CARDS magazine with the coupon. Here in Canada it costs $24.99 so I get it for $15 at 40%. It's well worth it and I guarantee they make the other $10 up on the rest of my purchases that day too. Plus I usually go in every week with the coupon for miscellaneous items. I recently went to buy my October issue of CARDS and was told of the new exclusion. Well I can tell you that Michaels has lost my business of minimum 4visits per month. This really ticked me off. I see no reason to shop there any more and I would much rather support my LSS. And come on---it's not like they are losing money on the magazines even at 40% off.
