Just my two cents (2.08 cents US - LOL) |
I've read, that the assumption that the cost is higher to do business in Canada is significantly higher is incorrect and is a fallacy used as an excuse by retailers to charge us more. Here's one example for the Toronto market:
Toronto's Cost Advantages
A little snippit from the above website:
"Source: KPMG Competitive Alternatives, 2010
The table below shows that Toronto has the second lowest business costs when compared to other major global business centres in each of the countries examined in the KPMG report. KPMG ranks Toronto sixth in business cost competitiveness relative to 41 other large metropolitan regions worldwide with a population of at least 2 million. In addition, Toronto has lower overall business costs than all 22 large US cities studied in the report including Chicago, Los Angeles and New York."
I'm sure there are more links out there to support that this assumption is a fallacy. I can see our prices being higher after the base price considering our sales taxes are much higher than most US places (e.g. sales tax in Nova Scotia is 15% versus around 6% in Maine which is a mere 6 hours from Halifax to the Calais border).
The Canadian Senate is looking into this very issue, as to why prices are so much higher in Canada on identical items. I can see some slight variances in pricing in Canada but the differential is quite high for many items. There seems to be no rhyme or reason and it give the appearance of price gouging.
