I used to work at a Mike's and had to quit after 6 months. I figured working there would be fun, plus I'd get a discount. Instead, I got yelled at for following corporate policies and then yelled at for NOT following those same policies. For example, if something rang up at a penny and I told the customer we couldn't sell it, I'd call the manager just to have them lecture me to always make the customer happy. So then next time when something rang for a penny, I'd change the price to match the tag, only to have the manager tell me the next day that I shouldn't be selling things that ring up for a penny. I do understand why things get tossed, (Mike's receives manufacturer credit,) but I don't understand why they don't donate it and just not take the tax write-off. When I first started, I couldn't figure out why all my coworkers were so sullen and rude. Now I know why!
I will say that I still love to shop there. I know, it's twisted. I just love their selection and since I now know some employees, I can get away with using multiple coupons and saving even more on clearance items. LOL. My 6 months of misery paid off in the end.
The best deal I ever got at Michael's was from the dollar rack - there were several (at least 5) water brushes hanging there and I took them to a manager and asked if they were really a dollar. She shook her head in disgust - took the pens and walked to the cash register - wrapped them in a bag and told the cashier that they were paid for - gave them to me for free! She mumbled that she did not want to have to throw them away!

How often are these penny markdowns?? Are they planned or just spare of the moment??
If planned I could buy a ticket to the states and stock up on craft goodies and it will still be cheaper that what we pay in the UK!!!!
Corporate sends a list of stuff that the employees have to mark down without advance notice. Most of the time, it's stuff that's long gone or there's only one or two hidden in the clearance section. That's why it's hard for employees to stay on top of it. There's just too much stuff at Mike's to know where everything is at all times!
Well, NOTHING will beat WalMart's pricing system for clearance...
I was in there a few months ago, and had gotten this cute little tote full of scrapping/stamping stuff, and it started out being $16, roughly... Well, they clearenced it for $12, and I bought two, one for a doorprize, and one for myself...
Then they clearanced them for $10, and I got one for a friend.
Well...there was ONE lonely little bag left...and I went to scan it, and it said "get associate for price" or something like that...and so they went and price checked it...and guess what? It was back up to $15! I was like, well I JUST paid $10 for one....and they said that was the closest thing they could see on their computer system...
At a later date, I got a gal in crafts who explained it like this...
"Walmart is the only company I know of where when they get down to one or two of them, the system looks for the most closely related item and prices it for that price..."
Here's an example from my personal experience...
They had wedding scrapping stuff on clearance...for $1 each...I bought several things, including paper, embellishments, ribbon, etc.
Ok...I found two more...and was thinking hmmm...$1....well...guess what? The sale sticker had been taken off, and they were back to like $2.88...and they had reset their displays and gotten new merchandise in...so that gal was telling the truth....sighhhhh....
As far as I know, they are still in the store...lol.
Nothing to do with Michaels, but just something to do with weird pricing policies...sighhhhhh....
I was at Michael's two days ago, and I was by the Clearance stuff. I wanted something in there, and when I pulled it out, it was normally $1.00 now marked down to 97 cents! Can you believe that that was in the clearance??
I see, nevermind, I still manage to catch a bargain when im out in the states.
It seems your pricing policies need to be consistant, everybody is confussed!! If you cannot sell items for a penny then why are they coming up at that price on the till, so doent make any sence!! Surely head office should be able to sort this out!! If they make up these rules they should be able to correct them!!
It is nice to know that it is not just me who has had this 1 cent experience with M's. It frustrates the heck out of me. I mean why can you not sell it and why do you have it where I can pick it up and then tell me I cannot buy it. LOL.
You know, I am amazed reading all these customer service nightmares, if I had the cash I'd be starting my own chain of craft stores LOL I had a huge issue with Michaels over their pricing as far as US/Cdn pricing I knew talking to store staff was a waste of breath so I called their customer service number listed online, and didn't get anywhere, then I asked for their corporate head office and asked to speak to a vice president, didn't care which one but one who could answer my question...well guess what I finally got great customer service and his cell number roflol...though I wasn't happy with the answer they had..my point is with all these complaints of poor service and inconsistent policy from coast to coast in 2 countries, these complaints/observations should really be forwarded on to their head office. I bet if you rec'd better service you'd shop there more often and not just in the clearance sections..of course you can just keep shopping where the customer service is the best...all of us direct sales consultants
i got something that was on clearance awhile back i think it was like 2.99 and i was fine with that when i got up there it rang up for a penny and she just gave it to me for free.
