I knew I wanted my card to have depth and texture, so chose the beautiful Stampin' Up! (SU) "Detailed Dragonfly" thinlits die for my main feature. Since there so are many little pieces to control for filling in the wings, I diecut the four colors each on top of two folded pieces of dryer sheets so the diecut pieces would stick in place until I needed them. The dragonfly was die cut a fifth time, on SU Basic Black cardstock for the outline. I discarded all the tiny black pieces from inside the wings.
Using Scotch Tape, I covered the entire back of the wings so the sticky part of the tape faced up through the wing openings. I used paper snips to trim around the outside edges of the wings to get rid of the excess tape. Then using a tweezers, I carefully removed each color from the dryer sheet sandwiches and placed them in their respective holes in the black dragonfly outline. Press each piece firmly so it sticks to the tape inside each opening.
The sentiment is from the SU "Piece of Cake" stamp set. It was stamped with Memento black ink onto the yellow panel.
The white circle was die cut using a Sizzix circle die, then run through my Big Shot using the SU "Tufted" Dynamic Embossing Folder. Be sure to spritz the paper with water before running it through to ensure deep impressions without tearing the paper. The circle was then backed with three more plain die cut circles which were glued in a sandwich with Tombow. This added height to the circle so it would stand slightly above the card front. Because the sandwich tends to bow, I used Scor-Tape over the entire back of the circle to attach it securely flat to the card.
I then attached thin strips of adhesive foam strips to the back of the dragonfly wings and body, then attached it onto the white circle as if it is hovering (as dragonflies are wont to do).
While I made this as a birthday card, it could just as easily serve as just about any theme, given the appropriate sentiment.
I am rating the difficulty level of this card as a "3" out of a possible "5" because of the time consuming paper piecing. It's not hard, just takes some patience to do a good job.
