When I saw the challenge logo with three little penguins, and then Design Team member Debbie's cute card with penguins standing in the snow, I knew what I wanted to do! Thanks for the inspiration Kim and Debbie!!!
My card base is Stampin' Up Whisper White cardstock cut and folded to the standard A2 size. The main panel on the card front is a 4"x 5-1/4" piece of Marina Mist cardstock. I ran this blue cardstock through my Big Shot inside the SU "Softly Falling" embossing folder. Then I used my Versamark clear ink pad and gently tapped it on the raised bump snowflakes. I didn't try to be super careful since I felt a little embossing in the background would look like a snow storm. I then dusted the blue card with Artfully Scribed White Detail embossing powder, and heat set it with my heat tool. This made the top of each bumped out snowflake white.
The snowbank was created by hand tearing a piece of 5-1/4" wide Whisper White cardstock so that the torn edge faced frontward. I then ran the Versamark ink pad over the torn edge and dusted SU Dazzling Diamonds so they stuck to the "top" of the snowbank. I did two snowbanks like this and glued them one over the top of the other with Tombow liquid glue.
The sign was created by stamping the Christmas sentiment from the SU retired "Wondrous Wreath" set, then cutting around the sentiment to create a rectangle. I used Paper Shapers zig-zag scissors to make the ends of the sign look like it is made from wooden planks like you see in parks. Then, using a craft sponge, I "aged" the edges of the sign with SU Crumb Cake ink. The sign post was created by stamping the SU "Hardwood" stamp using Crumb Cake ink onto a piece of SU Kraft cardstock, and trimming it to a size that seemed natural for the sign size. I tucked this "post" in behind the front-most snowbank at an angle. The sign was attached to the background using adhesive foam strips.
The three penguins were created using the SU "Owl Builder Punch". I punched out three each from SU Basic Black, Whisper White, and Cajun Craze. To create the owls, I simply glued the white 'tummy" shape onto the owls' bodies, trimmed off their "ears". The beak and feet were the hearts and feet from the Cajun Craze cardstock. The hats were punched out 3/4" circles cut in half. The "brim" of the hats was made with the retired SU "Word Window" punch. I cut the word window in half lengthwise then trimmed off the half at a length appropriate for the scale of the penguins. Note that when I trimmed the brims, I tried to cut them at a curved angle similar to what the punched out piece had on the other end. The hat top and brim were glued together, then a tiny flower from the unknown brand of flower punch was glued on top as the "pom-pom". Googly eyes were glued to each penguin. All three were mounted with adhesive foam strips. The little guy on the right was placed as if he had just fallen off the sign and lost his hat in the snow. The penguins were attached with adhesive foam strips to give the card depth.
While this card had several steps, it wasn't difficult to make. So, I'm rating it at a difficulty level of "2" out of "5". I like how it came out looking very 3-D.
