This is for MMTPT440 Patching Up the Year. My Dad was honored to serve our military in the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and the Merchant Marines. He loved the camaraderie of the guys, the discipline, and the revelry. He loved coming home to mom and his four little girls too. Dad was kind hearted, smart and funny, but over time as a military surgical nurse, it took a toll on him, the things he saw, the crisis he tended too changed him, the drinking to drown the sorrow and pain that he witnessed every day overtook him. When he left the service he was broken, sad, an alcoholic. I remember my grandmother making a quilt by using scraps of whatever she could find, one included pieces of my Dad's wool Navy pea coat and some of grandpa's old wool suits, the wool pieces were rough and scratchy on our little hands. When my grandparents passed away, my oldest sister retrieved that old quilt, by then falling apart, she lovingly stitched it back together, cleaned it and kept is out for everyone to see and touch when we got together to remember Daddy.
