This is for the second VSN challenge hosted by Robin. One of my strongest memories as a child about Christmas was my father comping home from work on the 23rd December, having a cup of tea then meeting the other fathers in the road with their wheelbarrows and heading off down the paddocks behind our houses to a big old stand of pine trees where they would help each other select a suitable branch for our Christmas trees.
Home they would come and place the branch in a bucket with stones around it to secure it and then it was our turn to decorate it with lanterns made from last years Christmas cards, garlands made from crape paper and cotton wool for snow.
We thought there was nothing more beautiful or magic and it meant that Christmas was only a couple of sleeps away and as the days moved on the sent of the pine tree drying out was wonderful.
It will always be the penultimate Christmas smell along with plum pudding and Christmas Cake cooking.
I replicate the cooking smells every year but alas store bought trees are not the same and I very much doubt that today's generations would be impressed with crepe paper and cotton wool, I am talking of sixty years ago, a much simpler time.
