Shimmering Watercolor Crayons

by Ellen Hutson

Turn your watercolor crayons into twinkling iridescent creations.

Supplies

  • 3 or 4 coordinating Watercolor Wonder Crayons
  • Paintbrush
  • Water mister
  • 1 or 2 coordinating Pearl Ex® colors
  • Neutral colored Cardstock
  • Bold stamp design
  • Toothpick
  • Gum Arabic® (optional)

Step-by-Step

  1. Step 1

Prepare Shimmering Watercolor Crayon mixture. Shave Watercolor Wonder Crayon into a container that can be sealed and saved. Add several drops of water and let soften.

  2. Step 2

Add an equal portion of coordinating color Pearl Ex™ to softened crayon and mix using a toothpick. It is best to stir this mixture before each use. You can also add a couple of drops of Gum Arabic to this mixture to change its viscosity.

  3. Step 3

Color directly on the surface of your bold stamp using your Watercolor Wonder Crayons. Start with the lightest color and add a coordinating darker color to add dimension to your image.

  4. Step 4

Apply your mixture of Watercolor Wonder Crayons and Pearl Ex™ directly to the stamp surface using a small paintbrush. You can cover the entire stamp surface or just highlight areas as shown. Clean your paintbrush between color changes.

  5. Step 5

Take the damp paintbrush and lightly brush the entire stamp surface to combine the Pearl Ex mixture with the colored crayon surface. Clean your paintbrush between color changes.

  6. Step 6

Stamp your image on Neutral Colored Cardstock and add a 2 - step accent.

Hint: if your stamp is not wet enough you can mist the image before stamping with your water mister.

  7. Step 7

    Finish your card.

Variations

  1. Gum Arabic
If you are afraid to shave the tip from your Watercolor Wonder Crayons and only want to make one or two cards with a specific color combination this method is for you. It does limit your color selection much more than the mixture which includes your Watercolor Wonder Crayons.

Dip your paintbrush into the Gum Arabic (this can be found in the art supply area of most craft stores) and then into your Pearl Ex. You will need very little. Paint it directly to your image. Proceed from Step 4 above.

  2. Direct to Crayon
This is the easiest of all methods, but is not nearly as consistent as the above options.

Dip your Watercolor Wonder Crayon into the Pearl Ex and color directly on your image. Mist with water and stamp your image.

    Experiment
I still would like to try this on black or other dark colored cardstock. I think it might be a total WOW. I just haven't had time yet to experiment!!!

the gum arabic is thesame as the gamsol that a lot of artists/crafters use with pencil cranyon? And if not, what is gamsol, because I cannot find "gamsil" in Michaels crafts store.

Gum Arabic is not the same as gamsol. Gamsol is odorless mineral spirit, Gum Arabic is a binding agent.

What a great tutorial. Thank you. What is the name of the stamp used/where to get?!
