Pseudo Soot Stamping

by Tina Wardell

Use pigment ink on metallic cardstock for a beautiful, safe alternative to soot stamping.

Supplies

  • Metallic or glossy cardstock

  • Black pigment ink (Brilliance, Memento Luxe, Versafine Clair, other craft or pigment inks)

  • Cotton balls

  • Clear stamps (Stampin' Up!® Peaceful Deer clear stamp set used here)

  • Other supplies as needed to complete the project

Step-by-Step

  1. Step 1

Prepare a panel of metallic or glossy cardstock.

  2. Step 2

Using a cotton ball, dab black Brilliance ink onto the panel until you have the coverage you want.

    NOTE:
Dabbing rather than swiping will give you the best coverage and effect most similar to the technique done with actual soot.

  3. Step 3

Mount a clean clear stamp on a block or positioner. Press straight down, not allowing the stamp to shift on the slick surface.

    TIP:
Solid images work well for this technique, rather than outline images.

  4. Hold the stamp in place for a second, and then lift straight up and away. The stamp will remove the ink, leaving a negative image.

  5. Step 4

Create a scene by impressing other images onto the panel. Images may overlap.

    TIP:
If you will be repeating an image, wipe the lifted ink away before stamping again.

  6. Step 5 (Optional)

Use matching metallic inks to layer images in the foreground.

  7. Step 6

Allow the ink to dry (gentle heat setting may be an option depending on your cardstock - ironing is not recommended on foiled cardstock). Use the panel to complete a card or other project.

Someone's going to ask - Distress Oxides did not work for me on mirror cardstock - they started off ok but ended up beading. Best results were with Brilliance and Versafine Clair. Memento Luxe was fine as well as other the pigment inks I have from ColorBox, though those are taking longer to dry. Do not heat set mirror cardstock with an iron! The foil will bubble.

love the cards. How bad does these inks stain the stamp when lifting the ink off. I know it does not effect the performance of the stamp but for me it is just one of those things that annoys me.

This is very cool. It is like the lifting with alcohol ink but I think much easier. Could be really with mechanical images...hmmm. Thanks! smile

I did this with Versafine onyx black, they are taking a long time to dry. I even tried a very low temp hair dryer. It's been more than 24 hours. The stamping went beautifully though. Try another ink?
