Mary is our hostess in the Color Challenge this week, and she has given us a choice of palettes: I chose Real Red, Basic Black and Very Vanilla. (The other option is Poppy Parade, Petal Pink and Whisper White.) The dessert option is to make a Valentine card. Last week I made a traditional Valentine card for the CYS challenge, featuring hearts and flowers, so I decided to go in a completely different direction this week.
I started out with my gelli plate, red cardstock and Squeezed Lemonade Distress Paint, which is similar in color to Very Vanilla. I brayered the paint over the plate and laid down a heart stencil. The first print was OK, but not exactly what I was hoping for. I removed the stencil and laid down a second piece of red cardstock. I liked that much better and used it for the background on my card. If you look carefully, you can see some subtle heart shapes!
I pulled out a set of papers from ages ago that is all black and vanilla. Looking through them, I got the idea to cut out some of the "newspaper ads" to make a collage, picking ones that suggested a travel theme and exotic products. I used Collage Medium and a brush to cover the red layer, and then each new clipping as I added it.
I set that aside to dry, and meanwhile stamped and heat embossed the Eiffel Tower and the greeting, fussy cut the tower and popped them up with foam tape. Added a few sequins, and the card was done!
I'm also including this card in this week's CAS challenge, to include newsprint-type elements with a positive vibe. I think this card is CAS enough and certainly qualifies on the other elements.
I hope you'll join us in the Color Challenge this week. It's a great opportunity to make a Valentine or two!
