These bird salt and pepper shakers were my inspiration: http://www.horchow.com/MacKenzie-Chi...8&cmCat=search
I had already begun this mixed media project, which is basically layers of acrylic paint and gesso on the mixed media paper, using the embossed wallpaper as a sort of stamp to add texture with gesso and paint; I also added more interest with a credit card dipped in the paint and the Sakura pen. Then I cut the finished product into small random rectangles and 'mosaiced' the pieces on another sheet of the paper, which had already been interspersed with music ephemera (from my stash of old old music from my studying days) and stamped inspirational words. The mosaic took a long time! Wasn't sure what I would do with it, although my hope was to make ornaments. When I saw these bird salt and pepper shakers, I thought the colors and patterns looked like my mosaic. So I used a bird template to make the body and wings, cut out two per ornament so it could be two sided. The hardest part was that I had randomly added the words and music, not knowing exactly what I would do with it. So getting the music and words into strategic places on the birds wasn't easy and it made for a bit of waste of my mosaic sheet. I'm going to do another mosaic, as I have plenty of painted mixed media paper and I'll do a better job of planning. I may make some stars next. This is a project I did with my friend who is an artist. She bought a video of this project (I cannot recall the name of the artist who concocted this idea but I'll add that when I can ask my friend).
Unfortunately this is one of those projects that you can't really see all the detail in the photo.
