Pat is hosting our teaparty this week and challenging us to use a sketch. We are sending paper hugs to Judy McGuire as she battles ovarian cancer.
The sketch I chose (and it's somewhere in the 700+ sketches here at SCS), was a long card with a panel taking up a third of the card on the left and a large space for a big sentiment. I never know what to say on these occasions, so "hello" seemed appropriate.
This background is from the big piece I did for Cheryl's mermaid card. To create the background, use a large sheet of polypropylene (like Yupo), dribble on some India inks in a couple of shades of blue and green and a splash of a rusty colour. Squirt on some water and take a small piece of polypropylene paper and use this as a tool to flick it in the inky puddle, smoosh and drag it around to spread the colour. Add more ink if not intense enough.
The ink doesn't actual soak into the polypropylene, it just stains it. Wipe any excess water off with a tissue or soft cloth.
I have a fabulous supply of lovely soft cloths....they were formally called baby wipes.....don't you just hate it when you forget to shut the lid! Seriously though, they really do make lovely soft cloths.
Next step was to put the panel in my MISTI and stamp this long leafy stamp using 5 coats of black Memento ink....not black enough so I then stamped it with Ranger Archival ink about 7 times. Perfect, until I touched it.
I did a little test stamping on a scrap to see how long it would take the ink to dry. Twenty minutes later I touched the sample and it was dry, so then I picked up the main panel and my finger tips completely removed the ink.
At this point I had nothing to loose, so I took a soft cloth (you're welcome) and wiped off all the ink. Like magic, not only did the black ink disappear but so did all the coloured india ink on the card base.
I loved the end result, so I left it alone. No doubt this "resist" technique has a fancy name, but to me it was an oops a daisy and further proof that mixed media is more often than not, plain old pot luck.
Thank you for looking and I hope you get a chance to join in.
