Today's challenge for our monthly tickle swap is Wabi-Sabi and Kintsugi. Both are Japanese philosophies. Wabi-Sabi is the acceptance of imperfection and flaws and the impermanence of life. Kintugi is an artist technique using powdered gold, silver or platinum to repair pottery and lacquerware. It has become a philosophy to live by: we have all been 'broken' by some event in our lives, divorce, death, estrangement, job loss... and we can become even more beautiful and worthwhile when we have worked on repairing ourselves.
The story goes that a shogun in the 16th century sent out a favorite pot to be repaired. When it was returned, he was not happy with the repair and asked that some artisans come up with a way to make the repair more beautiful. Often times, the repaired piece of pottery is worth more than the original, possibly just because of the powdered metals used.
I used a gel print I had, drew a vase shape, cut it in two pieces and Zentangled some 'stitching' on the layer below. Also added some gold ep 'repairs.' I layered it on top of some handmade paper and added some green vine at the top. Kintsugi reminds us that we are not perfect but we can still be beautiful and worthy. We often 'throw ourselves away', like a broken vase, without taking the time to seek another way to look at ourselves and repair those breakages.
