I didn't have time to even compose an idea for yesterday's WT-recycle for Earth Day. I'm very proud that Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson founded this day and is still remembered for it. I was a senior in high school on the first Earth Day. This is a challenge where I could live forever. I've combined it with the F4A-Marvin Gaye's songs. I chose 'What's Going On?'
This song is a departure for Mr. Gaye from his usual Motown Sound as it is more about personal material. It is still, sadly, relevant today. The song is told from the perspective of a Vietnam vet returning home. I wonder what Mr. Gaye would say about what's going on today...different century, same world. One of the co-writers, Obie Benson, a member of the Four Tops, witnessed violence in Berkeley CA on May 15, 1969 and was very affected by it.
I used an alcohol ink panel that I had painted a while back on a glossy coffee package. Cut the heart by hand and added the sentiment, the lock and the key. Unlock your hearts! The background is a piece of cardboard from the back of a pad of paper, Gessoed, sprayed with black cherry and bronze spray, old music and two pieces from a catalog glued on and some stenciled hearts. The piece in the upper left is a bit covered; it says 'sometimes miracles are simply good people with kind hearts.'
There is a line in the song: 'With the world exploding around me, how am I supposed to keep singing love songs?' I wonder, every single day, what IS going on? I can't imagine what Mr. Gay's father was thinking on April 1. One moment of anger.....many lives affected. This song isn't a protest song, it's a song about love.

Another beautiful and intricate design of yours with a lot of thought and heart behind it - an amazing piece of art with so much nostalgia, and I love the bold pink and purple colors as well!!

I love the beautiful colors in your background for this, Jean, and all the wonderful elements, including the words. I considered using this same song for my choice today, but went with "Mercy, Mercy Me". I've always loved both songs. And I was also a senior in High School on the first Earth Day : )
Great combination of both challenges!
