Oh, my, what great memories these bring back to mind! We made these years ago, but with ribbon instead of paper and using the oval styrofoam "eggs" instead of circles, so they would emulate the pinecone shape. What a great alternative with paper!

It will take nearly 2 sheets of 12 x 12 paper cut into 1 inch by 2 inch strips folded into triangles and layered 1/4 inch apart.
The striped pattern is created like this:
Starting at bottom center, using 2 each your 2 different papers, alternate colors to form 'square' (4 pieces total). Only the center needs to look nice and tight, the flat edges won't be seen.
Using 4 pieces of 1 color for 1st layer, aligne point between lines of bottom square.
Using 4 pieces of other color for 2nd layer, aligne point to point with bottom square of same color.
Keep to the pattern all the way up.
