My youngest son’s involvement in traditional karate sparked my interest in Japanese art. This stamp is representative of Ukyo-e, a major form of Japanese artistic expression between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Ukyo-e (meaning “pictures of the floating world”) are woodblock depictions of common, everyday life in Japan and are well suited for rubber stamp art. I saw fireflies for the first time during a trip to Michigan about two years ago, and my whole family was captivated by them. When I saw this stamp, I just had to have it. I masked everything but the sky with Post-its, and brayered the sky. I used my markers to color the masked part.
