My youngest son’s involvement in traditional karate sparked my interest in Japanese art. The background wave (by artist Hokusai, c. early 1830’s) is representative of Ukyo-e, a major form of Japanese artistic expression between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Ukyo-e (meaning “pictures of the floating world”) are woodblock depictions of common, everyday life in Japan and are well suited for rubber stamp art. The circular image represents a tsuba, the hand guard on a Japanese sword, which was usually ornately decorated. I mounted the tsuba on Dimensionals.
