For the final ABC20 location challenges, we are visiting Zeeland, MI. Zeeland is right next to Holland, MI and is known for Howard Miller clocks, Herman Miller chairs, De Klomp Wooden Shoe factory and Veldheer Tulip Gardens. It is also where my SIL Judy taught for most of her middle school band director career. Of course, during Tulip Time, the tulip gardens are extremely busy, although you can't buy bulbs at that time of year because you can't plant them yet. Zeeland was founded in 1847 by 500 Dutch citizens who left their home province of Zeeland, Netherlands for religious freedom, better economic conditions and their opposition to modern scientific and social advances of the time. One does feel like one goes back in time when there.
I used yesterday's sketch challenge. The last few sketches have been a challenge for me, but that's what they should be. I needed to make this 5x7 to get everything in and still let the tulips be the stars. I painted them with a technique I found by Maremi Small Art:
I used a tulip 3D folder for the background and circle and the circle and white strips were from some white cardstock that I painted with iridescent medium a while ago because I had too much on another project. Helps to save things, I guess.
Basically the technique involves splattering a lot of several colors, mix up some white gouache with water and use a large round brush with the watered down gouache on top of the splatters. I was very pleased how the white gouache created very soft shades of pink and green. Just two strokes of the brush created the shape of the tulips. It was totally fun! Maremi is also the artist for this week's WCW, a very similar technique to this one. Thanks for the challenges.
PS I thought about doing Zilwaukee, MI. Yes, Zilwaukee. I'm from near Milwaukee and I thought that was kind of cute.
