I created this card for my SIL's father's birthday. He used to be an avid fly fisherman, so I thought the rainbow trout jumping out of the water was perfect. Plus, it gave me a good opportunity to use a punny greeting!
I found a coloring page with a leaping trout at ColoringAll.com. As it was a .pdf file & not an image-format file type, I printed it off, scanned it into the computer, & opened it in Photoshop. I resized it to fit my card, & printed it onto a panel of watercolor paper.
I found a reference illustration of a rainbow trout online, so I could get an idea of colors. Unfortunately, that was just a straight-on side view of the fish, not curved like the image I was using. So I had to think more as I painted as to what color went on which part of the fish's body. Not to mention keeping a light source in mind. I love how it turned out, anyway!
I die cut 3 wave borders from mixed media paper, shifting the die back & forth for each one so the pattern wasn't identical from border to border. I ink blended them with Speckled Egg, & added swooshes of Brushed Corduroy, to simulate river water. I also blended the sky around the fish with Speckled Egg. I glued the backmost border on flat, & popped the other 2 up with foam tape. A rather scary part was adding white craft paint flicks over my image & the waves to make it look like water splashes. I was super cautious not to go overboard (no pun intended), & thank heavens it turned out OK!
I used alphabet stamps to spell out my greeting onto a strip of cardstock, & adhered that to my panel. Finally I matted the panel & adhered it to a white card base. I heard that my SIL's father REALLY loved his card!
