It is the custom here that on New Year's Eve children go door to door singing for candy or some coins....

That is just adorable and so sweet. How interesting that it's New Year's Eve. Christmas Eve would be more traditional here, and then in the south west particularly there's still a tradition on the 26th. It's interesting how different customs are in different countries.
