~A Woman Ahead of Her Time~

Poster: jkanack

I sort of did my own thing (what else is new?!) with this past Monday's TLC-quilt flip. The outer two panels are slipped but the middle is very random but from the same original panel. I gathered up all sorts of cut offs from mixed media stash...ai, gel printing, watercolor, you name it, it's here.

I thought this might work well with today's MIX-focus on something I read. I'm featuring a woman named Melitta Hedwig Suder-Pick, 1886-1972. She is the founder of MOWA, the Museum of Wisconsin Art, in order to house the work of her uncle Carl von Marr. von Marr was born in Milwaukee, of German descent and died in Munich in 1936. His work encompassed religious and mythological subjects and portraits. His best known painting, The Flagellants, hangs in the museum. It won gold medals in several expositions, including the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. It's a huge painting and very difficult to look at as it portrays exactly what the title says. It is overwhelming. von Marr had to flea Germany to Switzerland in 1917 because of the rise of socialism putting a price on his head. Milwaukee is very well known for its socialist government in the early part of the 20th century and would be a good study for anyone who thinks socialism is something to fear, as it was good for Milwaukee. There is socialism and then there is socialism. Thank you, Mrs. Suder-Pick. I keep all the catalogs I get from MOWA because there is always something interesting and beautiful in there, perfect for MIX.

Love the quilt arrangement that uses up so many goodies from your stash. What a nice bit of history story of Wisconsin!

Your quilt-flip does look like something from an art museum. Fun!
