The sister of a friend of my mom's recently passed away, so I made this sympathy card for my mom to send.
I decided to try something different, since I wasn't quite in the mood for coloring, but wanted to use one of the butterflies from "Flights of Fancy." So I found an appropriate sketch to do a sort of faux paper piecing with the largest butterfly. I went through my 6x6" patterned paper pads, and came across the "Natural" collection one. My mom's friend is a pretty down-to-earth "country girl," so I just thought these colors & patterns would work well for her.
I cut 4 strips from different patterned papers to size, & adhered them to a 5-1/4x4" panel of green cardstock, which I used just as a backer piece so I could treat the strips as one unit.
I stamped the greeting first, so I would know where to position the butterfly. (I wanted the butterfly to kind of "hug" the greeting.) I had contemplated heat embossing the butterfly & greeting, but thought the powder might "catch" in the seams between the strips & be a pain to remove, so I nixed that idea. As I was positioning the butterfly stamp in my MISTI, I just happened to notice that there was a tiny bit of text in the top strip - that I'd adhered upside down! I'm sure no one else would have noticed it, since it is subtle & so little, but I did. Thankfully, I had used my ATG adhesive, & it hadn't been long enough for it to grab totally, so I peeled up the strip, flipped it around, & re-adhered it. Finally, I stamped the butterfly on my panel. I was glad I used the MISTI, because it took 2 stampings to get a really good impression.
I looked through my collection of A2-size mat panels that I had made to try and find a suitable color. I thought the tan gave too little contrast, but the black was a bit too "heavy" for a 1/8" mat on all sides. So I basically split the difference. I adhered my panel to the black, and trimmed the edges of the mat so it was 1/16" on all sides. Then I adhered that to my tan mat, which I'd mounted to a white card base. Except for deciding on things like what patterned papers & what mat colors to use, this card really came together quickly!
