Linda has chosen a wonderful tutorial to follow for this week's Watercolor Challenge! I think you will love the challenge! Don't get distracted by my story!
Ok, so here is this butterfly's journey. I started painting this afternoon and was thrilled that my butterfly only took me about 10 minutes. Maybe I could even paint the dragonfly if it was this quick! Then I added in the pen lines and didn't love it but...it was ok. So I thought, hey, it only took 10 minutes, why not try again? So I tried again. Flop. Went back to the first one and added a bit here and there...and then I ruined it. I had no option but go for #3. and #4. and #5. and #6. Yep....6. By now my husband was out of his Zoom School (3 weeks at home all day, every day Zooming in the next room). I decided to go work on deadline number two for the day and postpone supper. Surely after supper, I could whip out a butterfly. After all the first one only took 10 minutes!
#7 happened. MUCH closer to the good look of #1 but....you guessed it....it needed a little something extra...Oh no, it didn't! Terrible move. Ok, so since #7 really was pretty close to what I was hoping for then #8 will work like a charm. NOPE. Not one to give up... I googled "watercolor butterfly sketch" and saw a pretty butterfly painted with only half of the body. I could keep the sketchy lines, and use the basic painting method but just create half a butterfly, maybe that would work better. I will give anything a try as it's now 10PM and I still have a major deadline to get to before bed. Most certainly not perfection. Ohhhh, my fingers itched to try one more time because I almost have it. #10.....was a FLOP. So here we are with #9. Thankfully, even if it's not what I wished.....it's presentable, I think.
Why did such a simple tutorial take me on this journey? I have no idea but I am sure your journey will be much more pleasant and I can't wait to see what you create!
I have this card blogged here but only SCSrs are getting the real story!

SO sorry you did not like your earlier attempts at this beautiful tutorial- I love this one, and bet I would like a few of your earlier attempts as well : )

Angie I feel your pain but wow oh wow this is absolutely jaw dropping gorgeous and I wish I had seen your other 8 as I know they will be just as exquisite. We are our own worst critics and from someone who keeps adding more, I hear you. Your doodling is perfect. It is just beautiful. In my fave's. TFS Happy day and hugs

I've made 3 this morning, but show only 2 the third one isn't a winner, I didn't see your 9 other attempts, but sometimes, doodling a bit around or cutting only a part of it, maybe you can save some...anyway this one is a real beauty!! I'm glad you've uploaded this pretty butterfly to the gallery

I will use the work impressive to describe this creation. There are so many things wonderful about it. First love the design with the butterfly partially sketched. The way you painted the wing with the flowy motion is perfect along with the shadows. Sketching with the pen can be tricky, especially on watercolor paper...I find a light touch is best. Your sketching is great. Thanks so much for sharing your deets....smiling here. Fav'd

I'm guessing that if we saw all of your attempts, we would disagree heartily with you....but bless you for your wild ride yesterday. Crazy stuff. Sometimes I think the stuff that looks the simplest is the hardest. I'm a little scared now but I will give it the old Jean try. I love that you showed the butterfly out of frame. Excellent idea. It's lovely!

Oh, Angie, I think your butterfly is fabulous...love the partial design. And, I had such a laugh when I read about your adventure. Though, I did feel your pain when you ruined that first one. I have made cards and loved them only to decide to add a little something and ......OOPS....ruined!!!
For this one, the w/c is great and I love the wing shape.
