The sketch showed hearts in the upper quarter of the card, but for some reason I kept seeing chicken wire! So I started with that in mind an pulled out my Stampin' Up! (SU) "Hey, Chick" stamp set.
I used masking extensively on this card. I started by using a scrap of paper to mask off the lower 3/4 of the card and stamped the chicken wire in light gray. Then leaving the mask in place, stamped the crazy-haired bird as if he was peeking over a fence.
I then masked off the top quarter and the bottom half of the card with scrap paper, and inked the hardwood stamp with dark brown ink and stamped it firmly so it wouldn't leave too much shadowing near the mask edges. I colored this fence with three different shades of Copic markers. Then using a straight edge, rand the broad tip of one of the medium brown makers across the top and bottom of the fence. I again used the ruler to draw thin black lines defining the top and bottom of both horizontal boards on the fence.
Since I wanted to use a blending brush to color the "grass" green where the brown hen was walking, I first stamped the hen using brown ink on to the bottom half of the card, then created a mask for the hen by stamping it again on removable label paper. This label was scanned using my Brother ScanNCut digital cutting machine, then cut out close to the image outside lines. This was then peeled off the backing and placed exactly over the top of the hen on the card front.
I used a blending brush to do the green "yard" being sure to make the foreground darker than up near the fence to give more dimension to the scene. I also used markers to draw "grass blades" randomly around the hen. \
Then masking material was then removed from the hen, and she was colored using three different shades of brown Copic markers.
The final step was to stamp the sentiment "Just Chicken In" from the SU 2005 "Best of Cluck" stamp set using black ink.
I am rating the difficulty level of this card as a "3" out of a possible "5" because it's not something I'd recommend a beginning card maker attempt. It's not hard, just requires lots of steps and pre-planning. I* think it will be a good card for sending to a friend just to stay in touch.
