This panel is for the Tuesday Teapot Tickle. At the end of each month we "tickle" one another. This month the theme was to take inspiration from artwork by Mary Nohl.
What an inspiration this lady was and my sort of thing. She collected all kinds of recycled items and used them in her art and created some weird and wonderful statues. I took inspiration from some tall statues that appeared to be people standing on top of one another.
I'm also putting it in the MMJ challenge to use recycled items.
I had purchased a couple of new stencils a few months ago and I've been itching to use them. One of them is about women and my tribe. I chose the stencil depicting women holding hands as well as 3 dancers. I wanted this panel to depict my love of SCS and the friendships I have made with ladies from all over the world.
I've also recently been taking an art journal class online and some of the techniques were used to create this panel.
I started by using black gesso on my cereal box and then pasting down some torn strips of paper out of an old Jane Eyre book. I don't like to tear books but I do have a special copy of this book so book lovers don't fret, it was pretty damaged to start with.
4 stencils were then used (1 down the side) and 3 in the centre. I masked each panel as I stencilled. Some areas aren't perfect but I like that as life isn't perfect and it gives it some great texture. Texture paste was pushed through each stencil. In hindsight I didn't need the 3 dancing ladies at the top but I'm not one to leave any area uncovered lol.
I started by sponging my middle panel but the colours weren't vibrant enough, so I plonked one of my stencils back on and painted colour through it. It was at this stage that I wasn't happy with it so I left it drying and was tempted to bin it and start again.
One day later today I decided to try and rescue it. I started by drawing around each of my stencilled figures as that was the main problem. You couldn't see them. I also wanted to have colour within them. After all they are arty SCS sisters.
Colour was sponged on the hearts and sides. I also traced around the hearts and doodled in the centres. Stickles added to the hearts and dots. Now it was starting to come together.
The people were drawn around several times as I kept adding colour and losing the images. In the end I decided to go around them with the stickles and IRL there is more definition and the texture on the black gesso....oh my...and ooh the sparkle. I love it. I doodled lines in white pen on the edges.
I rescued a piece of cardboard which was originally from a delivery post box made out of recycled pizza boxes. It's sitting on a piece of masking tape I used on this project and sponged. I tore the edge of the box to give the corrugated look and plonked gesso on top in places. Sponged with 3 different TH inks and added stickles. I also had a small piece of cheesecloth that I was going to throw in my bin from another project....rescued that and inked it up and plonked on the cardboard. I love cheesecloth. Added my sticker and doodled around the edges.
The tag at the top of the panel is a piece of masking tape that was on my desk. I inked it up more and added after taking a tag that came off a bottle of suncream lotion. I fussy cut the bottle out of a piece of paper towel in my MM stash that I had used to mop up inks. Added this to the tape using my tiny attacher after adding some of our poppets' foam alphas saying SCS. On the back of the bottle tag it says "Made from Recycled Plastic Bottles" and I will leave that as is.
The back of the panel has more sponged masking tapes that I tore as well as more of the paper towel. I stencilled on top of the paper towel the words "Art Sisters Untamed Creativity" using one of my new stencils. Love it and I can see that I will use this stencil lots more. Finally and still to be done I have a dried teabag that I will stamp a sentiment on and add to the back of the panel before sending this across the oceans to its recipient.
My DH says this is messy but he said it's arty and wouldn't be me if I hadn't put as much as I could on it LOL. I hope that my SCS friend likes something weird and different. It's not everyone's taste.
I think Mary Nohl would approve of my recycled items. What do you think?
TFL. Happy day

Oh, the fortunate TeaPotter sistah who receives this in her post box! Mary would be delighted, Jayne! I love how your friends keep growing on your card. I love the symbolism of them disappearing and reappearing as depth was added to your work. Just like friendships that blossom over time, becoming more dear through the years. The corrugated panel with the narrow phrase is fabulous! Happy day~o.

I have never seen anything done with BLACK gesso and am wondering if that is part of what gives SO much intensity and depth to those colors. I'm always sad that the camera can't capture the true depth and dimension of projects like this as I am imagining those stenciled crafters looking like they are breaking free of the abstract canvas that had held them captive. I am the one who sees really weird stuff so it didn't take me long to realize that there were 18 women featured in your pyramid and 18 hearts to border the project! Whether by design or happy circumstance, I think that's cool!

Mary is applauding!!!! I'm guessing I'm not the lucky recipient since you know I love weird. Rats. I love this artful creation. I dont like the word 'artsy', it seems diminishing.

Gorgeous, Jayne. I love the look of the torn pages on the black gessoed background. I should try that, as I bought black gesso for another project but don't much use it. Outlining the stencils really lifts them. I think you totally captured the look and the spirit of Mary here, and I'm sure whoever gets this will love it.

I'm so glad I didn't miss this one, Jayne. It's awesome and very appreciated for all the heart and soul you inked and painted and smeared into this intentional and exploratory, hot creative wonder.
