I created this card for a former student of my mom's, whom she taught back in the 1970s. They reconnected on Facebook a few years ago, & his birthday is coming up soon. He likes cats, so I decided the "Cool Cats" set would be purr-fect for him!
I flipped the sketch upside-down for my card design. The party hat is from "Birthday Pals." I stamped that onto a scrap of vellum bristol paper with Tuxedo Black ink, masked it, and then stamped the cat. I actually had to do that twice, since the first time I stamped the cat a hair too low, so the hat looked funky. Thank heavens paper has two sides! I used a circle die and partial die cutting to cut the upper curve. Then I colored the image with my colored pencils. I also added details to the fish & highlights to the cat's eyes with a white gel pen.
The sketch has the back curved piece the same width as the front, with about 1/4" sticking out from the top. I decided to make mine a full mat, though. So I trimmed a piece of teal cardstock to 1/4" wider than my image piece (to give a 1/8" mat on both sides), and used the next larger circle die--again with partial die cutting--to cut the curve.
After adhering a narrow strip of purple patterned paper to my background panel, I cut a strip of bristol to 3-3/4x1/2" and adhered it above that. I adhered my matted image panel above, towards the right side as per the sketch. I stamped my greeting, also from "Cool Cats," on the bristol strip with Onyx Black ink. I was kind of uncomfortable with all the white space to the left of the greeting, but my mom said it looked OK, so I went with it. The more I look at it, the more I like it!
I matted my patterned paper with purple cardstock, & adhered that to a panel of mint cardstock that I'd mounted to a white card base. I really love how this card came out, and hopefully the recipient will, too!
