This is for Polly's fun mixed media challenge using things found around the house.
The washing machine was making funny clunking noises, and on closer inspection I found a small wire brush - thank you finders keepers! I digress, I instantly thought I could use it for Polly's challenge.
I applied just about every ink and paint I own, slowly building up the layers so it was nice and thick. I then mixed some boot polish with sand and rubbed it on, using stencils in some places.
The boot polish kept coming off so I added some gold sealer and some bicarb soda, then I attacked the whole thing with the wire brush.
I road tested a scrap first and found it was important to sand in one direction only, otherwise it kind of ate the page. I also tried an electric sander, it not only ate the paper, but I now have a bald patch on my rubber craft mat LOL
I worked more gently when doing these pages with the wire brush and sandpaper. The effect is a grainy like mist.
I bought a packet of the Tim Holtz people about a year ago, and they are finally having an outing. The pages are quite dark and moody, perfect for these characters.
I had so much fun making this. Thank you for looking and stay safe.

LOL...oh Susie I was in your craft room with you whilst reading your description and process and could just picture you with your electric sander LOL...classic. So love what you ended up making and with a wire brush and sander and sand...awesome.
I agree those Paper Dolls are dark and moody LOL. Yesterday I was showing our poppets them and our DGD went “yuk they are so creepy” lol. I bought another packet recently off Amazon and when ordering them I checked they weren’t the same ones I had....well would you believe it...when they arrived, they were, so now I have 2 packets of these “creepy” people LOL. I am going to be giving some away as I will never end up using them all. I also love the boy sitting up in the tree. Awesome BG. Keep safe and well my mate over East. Big hugs

I wish I was there with Jayne (Ozpom) sitting quietly in the corner watching you create this incredible scene. Pity the border is still closed! Still wiping the tears of laughter out of my eyes. Oh the vision of Susie wielding the sander and the resulting bald patch - just so much fun. Where is my pina colada? Another incredible creation.

Your paint/ink/sanding experiment resulted in what appears to me as a cross between my dearly departed Italian relatives and the Addams Family. Creepy-cool and oh so memorable.

You crack me up Susie....an electric sander? Holy Moly...sounds dangerous! GREAT bg..I loved hearing all your additions and trials creating that. And the TH family members are creepy...I especially like the ones with the bent legs sitting on the branches. The girl in the white dress must be the star of the family....her dress is glowing! AMAZING creation!!

Oh my! Sis, you are a complete hoot and delight -- and danger -- all at once! LOL! I agree with Jean about wishing you had filmed this process. We are all imagining you with an electric sander on this background! It's fabulous, and so are you! As to the creepy family, they fit with this amazing background! Still smiling and imaging you working on this.... Big hugs and love! xoxo

Susie that’s just brilliant, sounded like the way I work, keeping adding paints but unlike you I usually ruin mine. That’s so funny Using a sander, you are lucky it just marked your mat and not the whole desk.
I love the colours and the way you’ve used the TH dolls,
