This is unmounted rubber I have had in my collection for years. I originally thought is was Victorian. I was off by 250 years. Medieval doctors wore this kind of mask. The long bird beak was filled with strong smelling spices, herbs and flowers. It was meant to filter "bad" air and mask odours. Bad air was thought to spread the plague. A doctor in France designed this style of protection around 1691.
