A Bouquet of Birthday Wishes

Photo Details
Poster: donnaks

This card was made as a Design Team inspiration card for Try Stampin' on Tuesday Sketch Challenge #445 which had the added challenge "Flower Power".

I wanted to make the card a different kind of fold what would make the post of the horizontal double panel layout. So chose a tri-fold card commonly referred to as a "flap card" (see Tutorials at Splitcoaststampers.

I started with a 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" base which I scored and folded at 2-1/4" and 6-1/2". For the top flap I cut a panel 5-1/4"x2" from the Stampin' Up! (SU) "Magnolia Lane" Designer Series Paper (DSP). The bottom panel was 5-1/4"x 4-1/2" and folded in half to make a 5-1/4"x 2-1/4" piece that I could glue to the bottom panel so it covered both the bottom panel on the front of the card, and fold over to the inside of the card. Note that I made it so that it was an extra 1/4" tall so that it would extend a bit above the edge of the bottom panel to make the bottom panel fold under the top panel without a gap.

The three flowers were cut from the SU "Magnolia Lane" pattern paper using my digital scanner/cutter with a .004" border around them (the background of the paper is black). I glued these to scalloped circles die-cut from white cardstock. I wanted these three card elements to stand up above the card surface for added dimension, so glued three craft foam die cuts to them. This also ensures the flower circles won't get crushed in the mail since they have a solid foam backing on them, rather than strips of foam tape.

Finally, a scrap of ruffled ribbon was wrapped entirely around the bottom panel and attached with Scor-Tape. The sentiment was stamped onto white cardstock, then die-cut using a Spellbinders label die, and matted with an SU Groovy Guava (retired) die cut from the Sizzix "Regal Flip-its" die set.

I am rating the difficulty level of this card as a "3" out of a possible "5" only because of all the steps it requires. If I were to do it again I would probably cut the card base to be longer to allow more overlap by the top panel.
