This is the front of the New Year's card I created. (You can see the inside of the card at this post.) I created the balloon in Photoshop with the Custom Shape tool. I drew a circle first, then added a triangle at the bottom for the neck, making sure the circle overlapped the top of the triangle.
I typed each word on its own layer. I rasterized the text for the "happy" & "year," so I could work with them as if they were regular shapes. I left "new" alone, since I didn't need to do anything besides resize it. I used the Warp tool to distort the "new" & "year" so the top & bottom (respectively) of each followed the curve of the balloon.
I changed the color of the words to purple, merged the 3 layers, added a purple-to-blue gradient, & clipped the gradient layer to the merged text layer so it just affected that layer. I added another gradient to the balloon, again clipping the gradient to the balloon layer so it wouldn't affect anything else. Finally, I copied all the layers to a blank letter size canvas in Photoshop, and printed the image onto a sheet of white cardstock. I cut it to 5.25" square, and adhered it to my card base.
