Jen (jennifrann) is hosting this week's teaparty for Steve, brother of Splitcoastie Shelly (mcschmidty). Jen has set us a fun challenge, based on cowboy techniques.
I chose the Faux Stamped Leather technique. I had so much fun creating the leather look that I forgot the part of the technique that involves stamping. Ooops...
After 8 years I finally got to use one of the most useless tools I've ever bought...an acrylic ruler with lines of holes that you poke an awl through. I then used an extra fine micron pen to draw a line down all the holes to look like stitching.
I cut a piece of kraft coloured cardstock about 8"square, then rubbed distress ink pads directly onto the cardstock. I started by doing a complete layer of Wild Honey, followed by Rusty Hinge, then Gathered Twigs and a final coat of Ground Espresso.
After applying all the distress inks, I wiped a foam blending tool over the cardstock. This step was completely unnecessary as nothing change. I purposely didn't add any water, I figured it wouldn't look leathery if I did.
I diecut the Paper Roses drover & horse die, and positioned it so I could incorporate a frame. Once this was done I went through my background stash to find the right backdrop.
The background is Brusho's sprinkled on aluminium foil, spritzed with heaps of water and dunking glossy HP photo card into the inky puddle.
Not all glossy photo paper/card are born equal. I bought some new HP glossy card and it doesn't perform anything like this background. The new stuff sucks up all the colour and almost separates the water from the ink. It resembles a splotchy rash that requires urgent medical attention. I digress, back to the card.
Thanks very much for looking and I hope you get a chance to join in and send some paper good wishes to Steve in Kentucky.

Yes that frame for your country drover scene does look like leather. Stitched as well too. I see you have been channeling the Tenterfield Saddler while make this stunning leather creation.

I just found a tool that I have no idea why I bought it. It's a cutting tool, Martha Stewart. Really, Jean? This looks absolutely fabulous. It glows!!!!!

Your faux leather looks fantastic even without the stamping, LOL. And I love the rich sky behind your cowboy. It's really amazing. I need to try my Brushos on the glossy you sent me.
I just use a piece of plastic canvas (for embroidery, I think???) when I want to pierce holes all round something and have them look even. I'm glad you found a use for your tool!
