I saw a story on the news about a WWII veteran living in Watauga, TX, who is turning 100 on October 7. He wants 100 birthday cards, so I made a few for my family & me to send to him. This is one.
I got the basic idea for the design from this card I saw on Pinterest. I liked the owl poking his head out from the "window." I punched the owl parts out & glued everything together. I stamped the stripe design for the party hat from "The Party" onto a scrap of red cardstock. I heat embossed that with gold embossing tinsel, and then cut the hat shape along the edges of the stripes. I did have to cut it down, as the original image was way too tall for my little owl. I then glued that onto the top of his head.
I wanted it to look like the owl was inside a tree, so I used the "Woodgrain" embossing folder to emboss a panel of brown cardstock. I forgot to die cut the hole first, though, so I ended up using a 2" circle punch to punch it out, so I wouldn't flatten the embossed texture. For the background inside of the "tree," I cut a piece of white cardstock, and inked it by dragging my Antique Linen Distress ink pad lightly over it. Kind of a faux-woodgrain look.
I die cut 3 balloons from various patterned papers I had in my scrap stash. I glued them onto the embossed panel and tied white crochet thread around the neck of each for the balloon strings.
For the greeting, I used the "Susan's Labels" template--a really oldie but goodie. I traced one of the label shapes onto a scrap of yellow cardstock, and stamped my greeting in Brown Shimmer ink towards the right side. I temporarily taped the label to the embossed panel with low-tack tape, flipped the panel over, & traced around the circle where the label overlapped. Then I cut that with my scissors, & glued the label in place.
I glued my owl to the back of the panel so he was poking up in the hole. I added lots of foam tape to the panel & owl, and adhered my Antique Linen inked piece behind the hole. I added double-sided tape to the back of that piece, then matted the whole thing onto a brown panel that I'd adhered to a white card base. I did sandwich the ends of the balloon strings between the owl and the background. I really love how this card came out, and hopefully the recipient will, too!
