Our Monday challenge hostesses have served up a great helping of challenges today. At the TLC, we are creating backgrounds with Acrylic Block Stamping. And over at the CAS, since it's April Fools' Day, we are to create humor.
I think I am a subtle humorist. Often times it's way past the punchline before I get it. So if you find yourself pondering my humor with my ode to 2 very odd artists and a genius...no worries, I'll spell it out for {u}!
For my background I used one of my long rectangles and three Distress Inks. I used a very heavy watercolor paper. It is fun to watch the color mix and mingle without intervention!
My Graffiti creating Salvador Dali, is a tongue in cheek compliment to the anonymous English Graffiti artist and political activist, Banksy. My youngest son introduced me to his work quite a few years ago. This led to many discussions regarding tagging someones property without permission, issues of stealing through defacing, and the other side which are issues that often never see the light of day. I appreciate the art of Banksy's work, but continue to disagree with tagging. Banksy remains anonymous and recently there was an auction of his iconic girl with a balloon where it was shredded as bidding was over!
I gave Dali a gem cuff link and a tag. Graffiti artists 'tag' buildings and then other artists tag over original works and so on. Dali is holding a can of spray paint. I paper pieced it from a scrap of my original panel. He's spray painted an Einstein quote.
Reality
is merely an
illusion
albeit a very
persistent one
I stamped the quote onto acetate and stapled. The card base was dry embossed with the TH 'Brick' EF. It adds great texture.
So my humor is tag: you're it. And how do you feel about graffiti? Do you see it as a different expression of the painterly type? Could we set aside abandoned walls to artistic decoration? Could we encourage a budding artist?
My town has a huge street mural project underway right now. It is called the 20x21EUG Mural Project. Graffiti artists from all over the world have been painting murals all over town for 2+ years now.
If you stayed with me, I thank you. I appreciate your thoughts. Hope to see your art on the walls of our galleries soon.

Fabulous and artsy card showcasing a fascinating mix of 3 brilliant people! Susan, I very much enjoyed your write up about graffiti. I've come to appreciate graffiti as an at form and enjoy seeing different artist's designs, albeit usually from my car window, I live in a very rural area.

I'm always 'with you.' Well, I guess I needed a bit of explanation but I get it. There was a CBS Sunday Morning episode a few seasons ago about how graffiti has become art in some places. Or I guess a few people have gone from taggers to getting paid for their graffiti. Something like that. I had forgotten about tagging. Anywho, FABULOUS AS ALWAYS.

It is always a delight to see your clever wit and your unique and fabulous art in the gallery. Thanks too for the lesson about "tagging" and all the many other things you share here in knowledge, faith, talent, and soul.
It is an honor to call you "friend."

I'm glad you mentioned the embossed brick wall because I was so busy looking at the rest of the card that I would have overlooked it. The citrus colours in your block background are gorgeous, and I think the way you did the sentiment is fab - the staple adds to the edgy feel.
I like seeing good graffiti. We saw some amazing stuff in Geneva. Here it's mostly on derelict sites. I have concerns about the safety aspect of some of it though, especially along railway lines.

Totally cool and edgy - love all the symbolism and your stamped acrylic is a beautiful blend of colors.
As to graffiti . . . no to the ugly gang signs scrawled on the sides of mailboxes and peoples homes . . .yes to the lovely murals on the miles of walls around the train yards and the parks and rec buildings since the Graffiti artists were invited to use these areas for their art by the owners.

Most of the graffiti I've seen is when I'm stopped at the RR crossing! But I'm enjoying yours. Thanks for your explaination because I never would've 'got' this!! Very clever of you. This is quite an origional card!

I KNEW this was your art from the thumbnails. I also got the "tag artist", but not the "you're it". I used to hate that game as a kid, but love your spin on it and love the personal invitation to join in the challenge/conversation. The Le Petite Bakery mural was the first one I remember in our shared little city, what...30 years ago? It STOPPED all the random, destructive tagging that was happening on that wall by creating something fun, beautiful and appropriate for that business. You always create fun, beautiful, and innovative art with a grand dose of edgy thrown in. We need some scratch and staples mingled amongst the flower and die cut gardens.

Well, you packed in a lot of stuff with this piece of art - the tag, the spray paint. At any rate it looks great even with out the description. Great job combining the two challenges!!

A "thinking woman's card", Susan. I learned who "Bransky" is(isn't) from your description. Recognized Dali right away. Very creative and artistic as always.
