This card was made for the pairing challenge jointly sponsored by Try Stampin' on Tuesday (TSOT) Sketch Challenge #378 with the theme "school days" (https://TryStampinOnTuesday.blogspot.com) and Double Trouble Challenge #9 (https://doubletroublechallenge.blogspot.com/) also with a "school days" theme. In addition, Double Trouble also challenges participants to also use the TSOT sketch, and include a bookmark or tag in the card design.
Talk about challenges!!!! I recalled that I had a brass template I bought at least 10 years ago that said "school days" on it, so I had my sentiment that would be perfect for a tear-off bookmark! I remember riding my bike to school in third grade, so out came my Stampin' Up! (SU) "Bike Ride" stamp set, and it's matching "Build A Bike" framelits dies.
I stamped the bike pieces in SU Real Red, but every time I've used this set, it always bugged me that the tires were solid and blocked out the background behind the bike. So I thought I would try stamping the wheels on clear acetate using Stazon Jet Black and Bazing Red inks. I liked how it turned out! The bike parts were assembed with Tombow glue and set aside while I made the main panel scene.
This panel is SU Whisper White cardstock cut to 3.25"x 5.25". I used a die cut scalloped circle to sponge a cloudy sky with ST Pacific Point ink. I then masked off the sky, and sponged SU Wild Wasabi ink on the lower half to create a grassy background and horizon. I then attached the bike with its stack of books on the back to the sponged panel using adhesive foam strips.
The yellow panel was the most challenging of all. I wanted its dimensions to fit with the TSOT sketch, with one of the matting sides to be the tear-off bookmark. The panel was cut to 4.25"x 5.25", then the brass "11 Inch Ruler" die from Stencil Scrapbook Collection was taped to the top of the panel (landscape mode) with blue painters tape. Then I spread Dreamweavers Embossing Paste over the stencil to fill in all the ruler holes in the brass template. I immediately removed the tape, and carefully lifted the stencil - washing it in soaping warm water while I waited for the paste to completely dry (about one hour).
After the embossing paste was dry, I fitted the stencil back over the dried paste and sponged Memento Tuxedo Black ink over all the exposed pasted. Be sure and mask the stencil so ink doesn't get onto the yellow cardstock!
I then perforated the yellow cardstock right below the ruler pattern using a paper piercer and a template from SU's "Paper Piercing Essentials Pack". This would form the tear line for when the recipient wanted to remove the bookmark. I punched the holes for the bookmark ribbon, then wove the Offray ribbon into the top of the bookmark.
The final step was to assemble the card. I used Tombow glue to attach the yellow panel to the card base. BE CAREFUL NOT TO GLUE THE BOOKMARK!!!! Then the sponged panel with the bike was glued atop the yellow panel.
So, I managed to meet both card challenges in a single card!!! I used the TSOT sketch and optional theme "school days", and incorporated a bookmark that could be torn off.
This card wasn't hard to do once I figured out WHAT I was going to do! So, I am giving it a difficulty level of "3" out of a possible "5".
I look forward to seeing what creative cards are inspired by these two partnered challenge blogs!!!
