With three grand-daughters, there is always a need for birthday cards! I had just gotten the Stampin' Up! "Magical Day" stamp set with its cute mermaid, so HAD to think of a card with a mermaid that met these two challenges. I was inspired by Sunday Stamps Design Team member, Lisa's beach theme; and by The Paper Players Design Team member, Laurie's lace panel.
I started with a standard A2 (8-1/2"x 5-1/2") piece of Stampin' Up Bermuda Bay cardstock that I folded in half.
Since my theme was going to be "mermaid", I wanted the background to infer ocean waves. The SU "Seaside" embossing folder was perfect for this. I ran a 4"x 5-1/4" piece of SU Night of Navy cardstock through my Big Shot using this folder so that the waves were horizontal in portrait mode.
I knew I wanted to have a scalloped panel for the required sketch element, and that I needed to use either a pink or aqua color based on the color palette specified in Sunday Stamps' challenge. So, since I wanted my mermaid to be pink, I chose the retired SU color Rose Romance to use with the SU "Striped Scallop" thinlits die. I trimmed the scallop to 2-7/8"x 4-3/8" with paper snips, and glued it to the navy embossed panel with Tombow glue.
The next thing was to create my mermaid focal point. I tried different colors of mermaids within the challenger suite, but an all pink or aqua mermaid just didn't look right. So I chose to stamp her with Memento Tuxedo Black, and color her hair, scales and tail with retired SU Pretty in Pink Stampin' Write Marker. Note that I did hand trim the mermaid since the die for it left more white around the edges than I liked. The mermaid was then mounted with Tombow glue onto a 2-3/8" "Stitched Shapes" circle die cut from SU Bermuda Bay cardstock. This circle with it's mermaid was attached to the card front using adhesive foam strips.
I wanted a "wavy" birthday sentiment, but just couldn't find one in my collection. So, instead, I mounted the two photo-polymer stamps from SU's "Endless Birthday Wishes" set so that they curved like a wave. This is one nice feature about photo-polymer stamps. I stamped this sentiment onto SU Whisper White, and cut it out by hand using paper snips. Then attached the stamped sentiment to a piece of SU Rose Romance paper, and hand snipped a matting for the white curvy sentiment. This was attached to the card front using adhesive foam strips at each end, and Mini Glue Dots where the sentiment would touch the aqua circle.
I am rating the difficulty level for this card at "2" out of "5" since once I had the inspiration from Lisa and Laura, the mechanics were pretty straightforward. I think it makes for a cute grand-daughter birthday card!
