I had recently seen a featured technique called "Watercolor Imprints" on Splitcoaststampers (Tutorials at Splitcoaststampers) that looked great for a unique background piece. So I incorporated it for this week's challenge inspiration.
The background piece was a 4"x5-1/4" piece of watercolor paper that I used direct to paper technique with SU Bermuda Bay and Purely Pomegranate ink pads. On top of a Ranger non-stick craft sheet, I then sprayed the inked paper with water until the colors ran and blended, then laid a "rose window" brass stencil on top of it. Since it had to dry before I could use the panel, I laid a clear plastic acetate over the top of it (with stencil still inplace) and weighed it down with a book for several hours.
While the watercolor panel was drying I stamped the large bold "Happy Birthday" sentiment onto a Whisper White strip 5-1/4" wide, then matted it with SU Cherry Cobbler cardstock.
I wanted the "scallop" element of the sketch to be bold to match the bold sentiment, so chose a Fiskars border punch. The scallop was punched from SU Bermuda Bay cardstock.
Similarly, the banner element needed to be bold, rather than wimpy, so I used SU Banners Thinlits Dies to create large matting. The "TO YOU" sentiment was stamped in Cherry Cobbler onto Whisper White cardstock, matted with Bermuda Bay.
Even after several hours the watercolor paper was still damp, so I removed the stencil, and helped it along by using my Heat Tool on both sides (to minimize warping) to dry it. Then, using substantial amounts of Tombow glue, I coated the entire back of the watercolor sheet and adhered it to the folded 5-1/2"x 8-1/2" Bermuda Bay card base, and but it under a heavy book for another few hours to complete the drying and make sure the watercolor panel was flat.
The final steps were to assemble all the card elements using Tombow glue.
This card was very easy, and I REALLY liked the Watercolor Imprints background, but keep in mind it takes a LONG-G-G time to dry before you can assemble all the card elements. |
